G'day all..have just read wtih interest Rick's thread on the Thuraya Satphone.
I'm seriously thinking of one of these phones and was wondering if anybody else out there has experience with them.
I'm heading to the Rudall by bike so need something dependable both in technology and reception.

Mate if you read other threads on this site re satphones I'm sure you would agree that the Iridium service is the go.... Both the RFDS and the Remote area nursing service use this system, that goodenough for me, I've used mine for 3 years and never a problem.

Cheers

Hey Trouper, thanks for that. Is there any point in taking an external ariel. I'll be on a bike so no roof to get in the way,but was wondering if it increases the effectiveness of the phone at all.
Cheers Paul

Hi Paul O, we went through this back in October. We originally had the Pivotal Globalstar which is another story but we had to get rid of that. We looked at the Thuraya and let me say that we really did like it, the big thing with the Thuraya was that it seemed more user friendly for us who are a little technologically challenged however we finished up with the Iridium because it was more reliable and the Thuraya from all accounts at the time were having a few teething problems and we had had enough of those problems with Globalstar/ Pivotel. With Thuraya you have/had to point the phone to the NW or NE can't remember which direction but that certainly stopped us from getting that one.

For us it was go with the proven as opposed to the new.

Cheers

G'day all. thankyou very much for all your replies. It's confirmed the direction I was starting go.
As I'm on a bike I was hoping the smaller phone would suit but it looks like Iridium is the go.
Thanks again Paul
