I have been researching doing the Kidson Track from
well 33 on the Canning over to 80 mile beach but it appears that part of the trek is no longer open to the public due to increased mining activity etc - I have read the notes on the trek in Exploroz but would like to hear the current details if possible.

Four weeks ago I drove from
well 33 to
Marble Bar via Kidson Track / Wapet Rd. It was freshly graded and in good condition.

I drove that section just less than 2 weeks ago. It is a great track but the section KiwiAngler is referring to is the bit that goes north of
Lake Auld and
swings around to the north west. Others may have updated info!
Mighty FINE bourban at the Iron Clad.
cheers

My plan is to do Cathy Savages "Ocean to Alice" trek which is in her book "Explore Australia by 4WD" trek# 7 page 84 - I will be doing the reverse trip "Alice to Ocean"
just that in researching it I seem to be getting conflicting info particularly the 2nd section
cheers

K-Mart to Alice is via the
Gary Junction Road and yes you do need a permit as issued by the WA DIA and the NT CLC. Both are on-line permits and issued straight away.
For the WAPET track from
Lake Auld to the Northern Highway at Sandfire you need a permit as per my response below.

Kiwi,
things have changed and there are access agreements in place between the T/O and various mineral exploration companies. The road was graded down to and then along the Gwenneth Lakes Track 18 months ago by the legendary Ray Ronchi of Inland
Services. From the Gwenneth Lakes turn down to
Lake Auld and the Kidson/
Telfer Road, it remains as it has been for years, the odd corrugation and a few washoutrs.
Razor Blade Bore is inoperable as are all water points along the track so you cannot rely on finding water along the way.
You need permits to access and to do this you send an email to;
mrose@ymac.org.au
outlining your reason for wanting to travel the Wapet, the dates you would like to travel it and outline the details of your party (Vehicles, equipment, experience etc to strengthen your case for permission). I usually add a line absolving the Nyangumarta Warrarn Aboriginal Corporation from any liability etc that may arise from something happening to you on the track.
Response may take a day or two. and I'm sure you'll find the NWAC helpful.
Hope this helps
Mick
