I'm planning a trip all the way around Austraia for up to a year, concentrating on Queensland, Northern Territory & Western Aust, ie " the outback " & going to as many out of the way
places ( 4WD ) as possible, I'm from
Melbourne.
Is any particular bank more advisable to be with in terms of credit/debit cards in these remote areas ie more branches etc.
Regards,
Tac

Commonwealth Bank and National Bank are in most Post Offices across Australia and 99%(guess) of towns have post offices. Also many outback
places have credit card or eftpos facilities even in remote
places such as
Wollogorang Station in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Any place that has a phone connection may have eftpos facilities.

With interchange arrangements these days, you can use any ATM and most supermarkets have EFTPOS with cashout facilities. Just
check around for a Bank that doesn't charge you for using another Banks ATM (some credit unions I think). My choice though would be to stick with one of the BIG 4 & pay their fees as you need the cash. At least they have good internet & telephone banking arrangements if you get stuck. Here's Mud in your Tyre

Mate, you're spot on; but I must declare a vested interest; I've been working for one of the Big 4 for the past 33+ years. Once you leave
home, it doesn't matter diddly which
shop you go to pretty much, you can get cash out at most remote
places. Don't forget,
places like Innaminka' Trading Post and Pub are the ONLY place the locals can get cash too.
Myself, I use credit card for 99% of all purchases and then make sure I either have the cash loaded into it before I go, so I'm using my own money, OR I make sure I pay the whole bloody lot off before the due date, so I don't pay any interest. However, don't get a cash advance on your credit card if you can avoid it as interest charges kick in straight away.
Good luck
Cheers,
Roachie

I also work for one of the big 4. It doesn't hugely matter with what Bank or Credit Union you use , as EFTPOS is so widely available. the only real advantage to being with 1 of the big 4 is if something goes wrong . . . and over 12 mths something very
well could.
Its pretty hard to contact your local CU and get access to cash . . . when you are 6000 k's away.
