I am planning to do the CSR from South to North this July/August. Can anyone give me an estimate of the night time temperatures that I can expect. I will be travelling in a Troopcarrier with a pop-top/campervan conversion. I can put up with the heat during the day but if it is hot at night I will take a tent to sleep outside, it can get very stuffy sleeping inside even on a moderatly warm night.

Thanks for any info

Here are some figures from my records.

Temps for lower half of CSR (Durba - Calvert - Carnarvon Ra's) in middle August 2001 were Min 10-14*C Max 28-32*C. We also had a couple of cold nights with frost.
Temps for Nullagine to Rudall R trip in 1997 mid July - Min 1-6*C Max 27-31*C

On the Rudall trip we alternated between 'swags' and tent depeding on the wind which was strong at times.
On the CSR trip we used a tent - small dome one for on the move, and larger canvas one when stopped for a few days.
The weather will be slightly different as you go further North. Don't have any records for a 1981 trip up the full CSR.

Tents are the way to go - no room for a pop top on a Subaru !!

Hope this helpsSubaru Forester

Michael,

My last CSR trip was in Jul / Aug 2002 and I swagged it with no problems. The weather was quite mild in the South and obviously a little barmier fiurther North. I'm always a swag person, but i don't think you'll find your camper too uncomfortable over that time-frame.Cheers, Jim

G'day Michael_W
Doing the exact same trip - leaving from Wiluna in early July - exact same vehicle also (2001 Camper Converted Troopy), maybe we'll cross paths? Feel free to contact me and compare notes.

Cheers

Look up www.kempen.id.au/CANNING.htm
There is a report on the CSR from July/August 1994. This guy reports a couple of temperatures at 6.20am at 0 degrees and a couple at 2. Most are oround 6-7 with days getting up around the 30's. Photos show them rugged up in beanies and thick overcoats early in the morning or it may be late at night. We are doing the CSR (south-North) in June this year so expecting nights to be cold (especially an hour or so before the sun gets up). Have heard that everything can be totally iced up in the mornings so make sure your billy has water ready to go.
