G'Day all,

Thought this might be of interest.

I recently noticed that the steering damper (105 series GXL with 100000kms) was
giving up the ghost fairly rapidly.

I called Toyota spare parts and asked the price of a new steering damper - $253.
I said I would get back to them and for some reason the bloke asked if it was a
trade inquiry. I run my own busines so I said yes. He then said the price is $125.

I priced a Tough Dog - which I'm told bolts straight on, unlike Rancho etc.) and was
given a price of $120.

It would seem that Toyota still plays pricing games......

John,
I can thoroughly recommend the Tough Dog Return To Centre damper as a replacement for OE jobbie. They cost $210- but are excellent value IMHO.
Cheers,

I'm developing a bit of play in my steering on my surf, just wondering if it's the steering damper that needs replacing or if it's somthing more to do with other componentes, ie Steering box, bushes or somthing.
Anyone know what it might be?

Jeff

Wouldn't expect it to be the damper. They're only there to control kick-back in the steering from severe bumps etc.

To my mind, play would suggest wear in some of the components.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I was told I don't need the return-to-centre (Tough Dog) damper as I only run standard size rubber. Be interested in your thoughts.

On the steering play issue - what has been said is probably correct - it's only on the rough stuff that you notice a shot steering damper (unless it's totally cactus!).

Cheers....

None of that surprises me John, I had to go three auto elecy shops before they could give me a flasher unit. Aftermarket: about $15. Tojo: Upwards of $50.
They'll always be the same but certain parts they provide are much better than the aftermarket stuff apart from steering dampers and some other things.
For example I always stick to genuine toyota coolant - that's one thing that's worth the extra money.
Definitely get the tough dog or any other brand.

Nice southerly coastal fishing trip someday.
