ROAD MAPS

Paper road maps ........
Does anyone know if service stations still sell road maps ? I remember as young(?) bloke Shell stations had them for sale. Some of the others did too I guess.
We are going to Qld next year and would like a good road map of NSW and QLD. We are turning off at Broken Hill or Wilcannia and going through to Townsville and then on up to Cape York. Should be a great trip me thinks. A paper map variety ,not electronic is what we are looking for.
So if anyone has some info on good , clear maps that show all major and minor roads I would be most greatful .

Thanks in advance
Terry

Hello Terry

You should be able to get the map/maps/atlas suitable for your needs via the Exploroz Shop before you go ...or try the local bookshop or camping store - typically they have a good range (though don't know where you live so maybe this option doesn't exist).

Larger service stations (and many of the smaller ones) will have maps as well so if for some reason you wish to delay your purchase until the trip you should be able to get one for the area you are in at least. I would however be tempted to suggest you get the maps you need before you leave - potentially slightly cheaper than a servo out in woop woop, more choice and one less thing to "worry" about (and remember the 6 "Ps").

As far as what specific maps you may need - cant really help as out of my territory...Hema make a good road/4x4 atlas - maybe all you need for this trip and any others you do. They also have annotated (e.g. fuel, accommodation info) maps of various areas (e.g. Cape York) if the atlas isn't suitable. There maybe other options. Others will hopefully inform.

Cheers
Greg

I remember the days when a stand of state maps was on the counter of every servo! On the back of the map was the complete map of Australia. All they sell now is Petrol, Pies and Pepsi! Going back then you could even get your car fixed there! Believe it or Not !!! Michael

Yes you can buy Hema/UBD maps at service stations; but not all service stations sell them, and those that do may not have the complete range. We recently travelled NSW, SA, NT and QLD and were able to get maps for all.

Bread, milk, laundry detergent, mars bars, chips, various hygiene products, all varieties of magazines, hundreds of items are available at your friendly servo.
But please don't hold your breath while you look for anything vehicle related!!!!!!!!

The Hema Aust road and 4wd Atlas is excellent. Ours is a few years now but has accompanied us on every trip as both an adjunct and backup to OziExplorer. Its made from good heavy paper so wont fall apart like folded paper maps tend to do. Also maps are in colour and the A3 size means they are easy to read. Available on this site - see the link near your post.

Cheers,

Val.

We bought our Hema atlas from the exploreOz shop and couldn't be happier with it. Lots of info and easy to read/see the detail in the maps.

Much easier to handle too than a large paper map.

We like the Hema Atlas as well. Think we may have a couple of them, of various types.

But you can't beat the charisma of a paper map.......spread it out across the bonnet, everyone crowds around, anticipating the journey ahead and each holding down a corner, while the winter south-easterly blows and howls, trying to tear oft folded map, into A5 size pieces.

Yeah, I like paper maps, but the atlas' are better!
(Wonder how one spells atlas, in the plural?)

Tourist Information places, which you will find in most towns of any reasonable size, usually have a good selection of maps for the state you are in, and they are FREE ! Happy travelling.

My wife has just come back from shopping and has an arm load of maps, atlas's and other traveling stuff.
Also bit the bullet and purchased a copy of Hema Australia Road and 4WD atlas. That should arrive in the mail soon.
If we get lost now it will be our own bloody fault...lol Or I could blame it on being an old fart......It's my birthday today. Got some socks, lotto and a yummy bottle of Glenfiddich. MMM ..that will be nice after tea down the track some where, around a camp fire maybe.

Thanks everyone for your input and advice. Much appreciated I assure you. You never know, we may meet on an outback track some where next year.
Safe travels and have a very merry Christmas and wonderful 2014.
