I wish to download Wikicamps to an iPad or similar tablet. I need to have this coupled with a GPS to enable me to view possible camp sites ahead as I negotiate a planned route. I saw this system in operation last June near Uluru; but failed to get any information from the person who showed it to me. Can someone please give me some advice on what hardware I need to enable me to achieve this aim? So far it seems I need a 16GB iPad Air or iPad mini with Wi-Fi and Cellular, to download a GPS program and Wikicamps data. Am I on the right track? Is there an Android or other tablet which can serve my purposes? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards. Lynton.

Any smartphone will do, tablet will require internet access (whether it be via phone network or wifi), with GPS inbuilt.
We have it running on an Android smartphone and also an android tablet with wifi as we have a Telstra broadband wifi modem running all the time off the 3G network.

Lynton,

Also have a 32gig iPad, with wi-fi and cellular. Got Wikicamps off the Apps store, for less than $10, can't really remember at the moment.

Also have Hema app loaded too, and the gps activates almost immediately when you switch it on. After advice got on this site, bought a prepaid SIM card and pay $180 for 12 months. As I'm only home 2 nights/week, can access emails/internet, as long as I've got a signal.

Wikicamps is great, though you do get some "honest" comments on there, and there are a few inaccurate info. The gps will work ANYWHERE, not just there are phone towers.

Bob.

Greg,

Seem to recall usage is 12gig for that plan. Anything higher reverts to monthly rates.

Just checked my usage, and have 257 days and 9.32gig left, so maybe I'll run out later in the year?

Suits me at the moment Greg, as I'm often out of range, and driving as well, for 4 days/week.

Lynton,

I can't comment on the Apple gear, but I have the app on my android phone - it works through either GPS (most newer phones have GPS), or I can turn off the GPS and it triangulates through the mobile phone system to find my location.

Seems a very good app and clearly popular. Free for 14 days and then $4.49.

I have it running in Android phone & tablet.

Also are you aware that you can download details for offline viewing? Very good feature for when out and about with no internet access

Totally agree. Works well. I use it in conjunction with Campin' Australia which comes from the same app producer. It contains additional information like fuel and toilet locations and seems to have a greater number of free camp sites than Wikicamps. In combination, they almost cover the whole camping spectrum.

You're on the right track, Lynton. If you get an Apple device with 3G, it will have an inbuilt GPS. No external GPS required. Nor do you need a specific GPS program, as Wikicamps interfaces seamlessly with the onboard GPS (as do all the other GPS-enabled apps).

The only time yo need an additional GPS program is if you choose to connect an external device such as a Bad-Elf or similar.

Any size ipad will work. Program takes up less than 10Mb, offline maps 140Mb, and depending what campsite data you keep, say max 50Mb for all Australia.

I can't help with android stuff.

I have it on an Ipad cellular and on an android Asus phonepad and both work Wikicamps the same except the android GPS marks are more accurate as they go to 0.x
Apple only goes to 0 - no point

I think android Asus phonepad (size of an Ipad mini) option is better as the apple is not a phone as well as a tablet.

The "Asus phonepad" seems to be connecting (calls) as well as any other blue tick phone including the I phone. The Asus's battery is still at around 70% when an I phones diabolical battery dies which needs charging up to 3 times a day!!! (yes we have an I phone as well.

Apple I Pad battery is long lasting

It (Asus) has GPS etc and hotspot capabilities as long as you get the older model (champagne or titanium colours) you can get a new one on eBay for as little as $250 delivered and it's all you need to do the job + phone too!
They have an internal hard drive of 8Gigs but can be expanded by using up to a 32gig micro card giving you up to 40 Gigs

WE have been on the road for nearly 2 years and 3 months and use Wiki all the time, the ASUS devises are new to us 2 weeks or so. Should have got them sooner.

Cheers & a happy new year to all!
