D-Max Dave
Hi all
Just a canopy installed on our new DMax, It took me a long time to decide which canopy so I thought I would comment on the one I chose, it might help a little if you are choosing one.
I went for a steel SMM canopy, which I had installed by the guys at Opposite lock
Ipswich, I was told that the steel is 15kg more than fibreglass, the Dmax rear barley moved with the canopy on.
I have only had it for a few days and have done one weekend camping trip with it on, so far I love it, it fits the car like a glove, in fact it looks like part of the car not an add-on, the color coded paint is spot on also.
The window twin locking mechanisms feel solid and positive when they lock (lift up both sides) and the rear is a slam lock like a car door, the rear also has central locking connected to the car central lock system.
Inside, the canopy is fully lined with vinyl, has an internal roof light (position could be better, its a bit hard to reach), and the rear window has a demister ( i presume it comes on when the cab rear window demister is turned on.
The front window of the canopy is a slider to allow you to wash the rear cab window.
The canopy comes with roof bars rated to 85kg I think.
As I said so far very impressed, will post more after I have hit some rougher longer tracks, pics to follow after i wash it ( car & canopy are Black, need a lot of washing LOL)

Sound just like the one I am getting but
mine is the Razorback but I believe they are the same as the SMM.
It might weigh 15kg more but my understanding is that you do not need to reinforce the roof for the roof bars which come standard so my guess is they would be closed to the same weight anyway.
They definitely look great, just need to wait till March to get
mine ;=((.

I just had one installed on my Hilux. I had the guys at OL installed rhino tracks instead of the sports rails. Should give lots of options in the future.
The SMM website states that the canopy's have been tested to 400kg. Not sure if that's really true?
Have you see any on your travels that have a roof top tent installed on them?

I'm not to fussed about the rack on the canopy, I will fit a rack over the cabin to keep the weight a bit forward of the rear axle.
Not sure about the rating of the rails on the canopy.
I have not seen any SMM canopies around, but I have not really been looking till now.

Very happy with it, love the rear slam door and central locking.

Dave - your post is very timely as I just picked up my D-Max last week and have been wrestling with which canopy to buy. Do you mind sharing the cost of yours? It sounds very impressive. I'll look forward to your photos.

Here are some pics, price wise cheaper than ARB, IronMan, EGR, and Carryboy, I got a good deal through OL because I am spending a fair bit in their store, ie:
snorkel, Bar, winch,
suspension etc.
Talk to the guys at OL, they seem keen to do a good deal.

Looks very nice :)
I also have a Dmax and went through the researching last year. After a lot of looking, I decided on the
Alpha from Caddy. Very
well made, colour coded, is lined and comes with roof racks etc.
It was the cheapest of all of the canopies I looked at $2900 fitted.

Dave - as I said before, your post was very timely. I sought quotes from OL in
Ipswich and in
Toowoomba. Your blokes were several hundred cheaper.
Mine is now on order and I'm looking forward to having it fitted. Thanks!
