I rang the ferry company,Fantasea and asked whether i can take Gunny over on the ferry.I was told yes not a problem. On the way across i asked the ferry staff what caravan parks are pet friendly.I was told there is no caravan parks on the island and the only place with powered sites is at Bungalow Bay.So i rang them to book a site but was told that they dont take pets.I did my best to
free camp where i thought it was ok.On speaking to a few business owner and telling them of my problem they all commented on how much money it would be costing the Island not wanting
grey nomads or campers. They all felt having a green council is a step backwards for bossiness. On my 3rd night a police officer who was friendly and polite informed me where i was staying was not permitted. He then informed me it was a by law that you cannot sleep in you car on the Island. The thing that gave me the poos was why didnt they ferry company tell me i cant stay anywhere with a pet and i woudnt have wasted my money going across.

How do you blame the greenies, council and the boat company for the problem.
The Bungalow Bay Koala Village is privately owned and decides whether dogs are allowed or not. It is an eco establishment that caters for those who wish that sort of stay, dogs and Koalas are a great mix.
I don't believe anyone has tried to establish a van park as most vanners would be day trippers. Guess there is no business case for one. Nothing to do with greenies.
Might be just a reason for the bylaws, due to the number of backpackers that go over there.
Most dog owners ask in advance whether dogs are permitted, so how do you blame a ferry company for the problem.
I can assure you the
Townsville city council can't be labeled green. They are just a normal city council catering for all. In fact they are Liberal run, so the notion of anti business is very wrong.
Sorry your stay wasn't what you thought, but to do have to shoulder the blame for not researching the accommodation, even the copper was nice.

Yeah Stuart it must be the greenies fault you didn't do your research, I just googled camping on Magnetic Island and guess what I found ??? that's right information about the Island, I doesn't seem like a dud to me , but then again I'm someone who researches my travels so as I can't blame anyone for my problems.
By the way it's a National Park no pets allowed any responsible pet owner would no this.
Look
HERE all the info you need on Magnetic Island googled in less the 30 seconds.
Stop blameing others for your lack of information.

Yeh the lesson is to
check stuff like this before you go.
Now remember Magnetic Island is pretty small and the habitable part is even smaller.
Its not like its a Moreton, Stradbroke or Fraser
No surprises that there is no
free camping.....have a look arround
Townsville its self...I don't think you will find any
free camping there either...plenty try it on up along palaranda or even on the Strand BUT don't get away for it long.
Show me any major town or resort where they allow
free camping.
There is a
free camp on the highway to the north, some national parks and some other
places you can get away with it out of town.
If they alowed
free camping arround town and over at maggy, the genuine tourists and residents would be up to their armpits in free looaders.....and in the past there where a lot of problems with people sleeping rough and
free camping.
They have put a stop to that along with getting rid of the massive feral cat
population along the strand and palaranda...no one wants to go back to the way it was.
As far as dogs......by now you should have figured out that the majority of people have no tolerance for other peoples dogs and the
camp ground or caravan park that will permit them is the exception rather than the rule.
I am surprised they still allow dogs on Maggy at all.
Townsvill and in particular magnetic island ar the great
places they are now specifically because there is no
free camping..and the camping a and caravanning grounds have the regular patronage thay have because they do not permit dogs.
25 years ago when my brother first moved back to T'ville they lived in a caravan park for 6 months with 3 dogs and went camping and hunting for pigs and rabbits up in the ranges every week end......those days are long gone.
cheers

Ya got statistics on that.
Regardless, there are plenty of caravan parks and
camp sites that do not accept dogs.
So it would be wise to
check when planning your trip and not just assume you can take your dog.
AND
Most of those
places that my brother and lots of other people used to go, with their dogs, have agood time, and reduce the feral animal polulation are the same
places, but are now no longer accessable for various reasons like being declared national parks in spite of being vermin infested degraded scrub.
cheers

When I was working I went to Maggie on a yearly basis for some quiet time and some great fishing. You know the type, rent a house for a week, just veg out on
the beach and get in some good fishing. Either sport and game fish. What ever was going out with a spare
seat.
I must tell you that I and mostly all those not out to make a quick buck love the place. I am not a greenie but for once I thank them for keeping Magnetic Island as Maggie.
Stop knocking the island because it doesn't suit you. And good on the "no pet" policy. No one offered to pay for the tent that an unleashed dog bleep on and had to be tossed out. Definitely not the "identified" owner.

Washed twice and still smell it. How would you like to be in it in the tropics which is where we were. At 2AM at 20 degrees and no breeze it was torture.

Lol, good one Rosco.
Stuart, you asked 'why didnt they ferry company tell me i cant stay anywhere with a pet and i woudnt have wasted my money going across.'
Bingo, why would they tell people that and not have the fare over ?
Bad overall I know, but they'd lose biz.

I, on the other hand would like to thank the Greenies.
For keeping the dog and cat toting
free camping freeloaders away from what is a magnificent part of Aus.

Well Stuart, at least one good thing has come of it : you know more than you did before your visit and can now consider yourself a smartarse like some of your respondents. Pity you're still a freeloader on account of owning a dog though. You've even been associated with somebody else's dog pissing on some poor old soul's tent who couldn't possibly have brought himself to clean it.
It's not what it used to be on here but it's not always full of these........either.
Have a google for "Badger's caravan reports" and do a bit of research especially on the coast or in high demand areas. There's plenty of dog friendly
places around. Pity there are plenty grumpy old fart know all friendly
places too.
