Truckster, if you're still thinking of a Magellan from the states then
check out www.shopharmony.com there have been a couple of reports of good prices on the Yahoo Magellan group. How does US$189 for a factory refurbished Platinum or US$199 for a factory refurbished Meridian Colour sound?
Just enter meridian in the keyword search function.
I know where I'd be buying one from.
Regards Andrew.

nope not much if you have the PC cable and the Aussie basemaps.. the basemaps are the trick to getting hold of them, rare as elephants balls on a fly...

I got my original Platinum from the states for $600 landed (didn't I truckster?) and was VERY happy with that at the time. When I did it the Aus $ was in the very low 50's, if I was to do it again looking at those prices for refurbished units that's the way I'd go. I'd love to have 2 units a Platinum and a Colour.
The mapping on the Platinum does tend to get a bit cluttered at some zoom levels and being monochromatic (how's that for a big word :-) it can be difficult to see where tracks and waterways diverge. Apparently the colour is better in this regard.
The beauty of the Platinum for me is that I have just taken up geocaching (absolutely great fun !!!!) and the compass is a great feature as it points directly to where you have set a GOTO.
For geocaching the Platinum is the weapon of choice at the moment.
Regards Andrew.
ps Australian basemaps are available it's just that people don't advertise the fact that they have copies ;-)
