Hi All
Both tyres on my camper are worn about the first two inches on the out side.
Not sure what has caused it.
The camper has done a lap around Aus and was fine , Then done a trip to Cape York a year later and by the time we got back to Tassie had that bald edge on both tyres.
Any Thoughts.
Regards
Tony.

Hi Tony, is it a single axle or independent suspension?

HI Ian
It is a single axle out of a ford with the brakes and lines attached.
I put shocks under it before Cape York.

Hi Shaker
Yeah sorry about that.
It is a single axle off a ford car with all the brake setup on it.
It fit straight under my camper trailer I put shocks under camper
before we went to Cape York.

What Ford car is it from? Is it a rear axle and the diff has been removed?

Not sure what ford it was, but it was front wheel drive so no rear diff.
The bloke had the axle ready for me to pick up. The axle has a natural bend each end. I now think both wheels are toeing inwards.
Thanks.

Hi Tony, You do not state what kind of suspension you have on your van.
If it is an axle, the may be bent.
To check this you need a straight edge about a metre long & place it on all sides of the axle.
If get a side where you can see light through the axle will be bent.
If this is the case the best answer is to get a new axle made but make sure it is heavier then the original axle.
If it is a independent suspension you will have to take it to a suspension expert to be checked

It sounds as if it has a solid axle and that has taken a hit near the middle of the axle and now the wheels instead of being parallel to each other, are now toeing INWARDS which will quickly evaporate the rubber off the outer edges as they scrub sideways down the road.

Tyres like to roll and not be used as erasers.

If worn as you say it should be possible to see the toe in by looking discerningly at each wheel face and it's relationship to parallel with the sides of the camper.

Checks like mentioned above are a good way to find the where on the axle it is bent
The bend will be either backwards or upwards or a combination of both directions.

Hi Ross
Thanks,
Yes you are right it is a solid axle out of a ford and yeah now I come to think of it, one day when I was looking at it I thought it looked like it was toeing inwards . I will investigate further.
Thanks.

Lift the camper off the ground, using a sharp object, eg: a screwdriver, scribe a line around each tyre. then with the help of someone measure the distance between the front and the back off the tyre, this will give you an indication as to toe in or out of the wheels and whether you have a bent axle or not.

Thanks mate.

You got a bent axle, chum...no doubt about it.

You have a axle out of a pasenger car designed for " improved surfaces" and you have been up the cape.
Hardly surprising

Yea I know Bantam but you would think it would be stronger than the 40mmx40mm that was under it. But that is ok, now I know I have a bent axle I will replace it.

Thanks Bantam.

cheers
