Does Oziexplorer CE open on a laptop or desktop computer ?

I am sure there are software upgrades waiting for me for my Oziexplorer CE which is running on my 7" in-dash unit in my car.

However the unit is not hooked up to the internet and I don't seem to be able to open CE on my laptop or desktop, so how do I go about getting the upgrades ?

Thanks,

Willie

I put oziexplorer ce on my dash unit by putting the SD card from the dash unit into the card reader on my laptop (connected to internet) and then downloaded the file onto SD card through the laptop and then put the SD card back into the dash unit.

I imagine any upgrade file for CE would be able to be transferred the same way.

Just another thought while you talk about CE which is a windows product do you probably mean updates to Oziexplorer Android??????? rather than windows CE

The latest version of OziExplorer for Android is version 1.25

If you go to Oziexplorer in your dash and then go to menu and then go to help - one of the options will be "about" and in there it will state the version number of your software

Hello

Windows CE is a special operating system designed for "mobile" devices such as PDAs and a bunch of GPS navigation devices ("on dash" units e.g. Hema Navigator and "in dash" units such as one the OP has) Therefore if running OziExplorer on a CE device you need the CE version not the Android version which obviously only runs on Android devices.

I just saw that the latest update. It is dated 18-2-13, so there is nothing for me to download anyway. Thanks for your help.

I have Oziexplorer for Android with the Exploroz software upgrade and it is easy to use. I also have the full blown Oziexplorer which I also find easy to use.
So why is CE such a horrible, unfriendly , hard to use bit of gear. I hate it and hoped there might have been a big upgrade to improve it.
I am even considering disconnecting my 7" in dashboard unit running CE, and installing the Hema unit. I watched a video on youtube featuring the Hema unit and it is very user friendly.

Hi Willie

I used OziCe for years on a PDA then Garmin Mobile Mapper. Was fine though I am a man of simple needs (waypoint and track recording + overlay of pre-recorded tracks). Lots of people seem to like Hema Navigators (and similar) which as mentioned also run OziCE. At this point in time OziCe is probably better, function wise, than the Android version though hardware options possibly outweigh this.

Keep in mind you can customise the screen using Ozi Screen Designer...this may make it more user friendly by changing buttons and screens to suit your personal needs?

I am not sure but at a guess would say CE devices are probably on the way out - no idea if MS crew stilll work on CE operating system? Suspect OziCE updates won't be going anywhere fast.

Cheers

Yeah, used OziCE since at least 2005 with an old HP PDA till it finally decided to self destruct by jumping out of it's dash mount earlier this year. Quite a good port of the software. Very easy to use and customize with the Screen Designer application. Seem to remember using Active Synch (?) at some stage for some of the software update process.

Looks like I'll have to move to the 21st century and acquire an Android device for future use. More gadgets LOL

Greg, Microsoft made Windows CE "End of Life" and dropped normal support in 2009. Later Mobile 6 device was EOL at the beginning of 2013.

Professional support was available until about a year ago but the cost was well beyond what is reasonable for a GPS.

Android is definitely the go.

Boobook2, Gramps and Greg - thanks.

I will try the Screen Designer today. I had never heard of this before I posted here.

One thing about the software that really annoys me is the fact that I have to OK two windows everytime The software opens.

One of the windows has a box that lets you tick "don'ask me this again",but ticking yhat has no effect. I asked The Ozi people how to fix this and they just said they had no idea. Pretty weak that.

I will report back after I have tried the Screen Designer.

Happy New Year to you,

Willie.

I used the screen designer to place my current speed in big red letters up in a spot that stands out and is easy to see at a glance.

Like Gramps and others we basically use OziCE to display a track file of where we planned to go and where we are on a map. No waypoints, audio files and proximity triggers.

Works a treat fur us and since 2010 we have never needed to complain about it. It's installed on a box in the dash.

We still carry paper maps as well. And we can still use a compass.

MichaelW14, Just in case this might be of any help, often people percieve a problem to be with their CE device when there may be some simple solutions to fix the problem of poor operation.
Ozi CE is a very stripped down version of the pc one, and has much less capability and often the "chip" in the device is limited. As well as the already mentioned option of refining your device screen with simplified or personalised screen skins using the free screen designer try something like these options to ease the "workload" on your CE device:
1. If you hold a lot of maps in your map folder, try and cull them down to those most relevant to your area of travel, and add and remove as you go.Lots of maps = lots of memory use sometimes.
2. Try and use maps converted to the latest oziexplorer file formats. As an example, the latest hema maps in ofx4 format are much smaller files than older versions in ecw format and are handled much more easily on CE devices.
I initially moved to android after losing faith in my old CE device, very happy with the android system by the way , but I noticed a marked improvement in performance of the old CE device after making the above changes. Might be a cheaper option, if you already have the ce device, to upgrade or convert your maps and then check it out. If you are going to migrate to android you will need to convert older maps anyway to get the best performance.
Cheers

Hi Peter, thanks for the informative answer. At present, I use the latest state by state EOTopo and load them from my SD card as I need them, so I am doing the right thing there.

The screen design software sounds like it could help me, but if it is hard to use, I will fall in a big heap as I am a computer idiot. Will this let me have buttons like "MARK WAYPOINT"and "TURN TRACKING ON/OFF" ?

I will have a go today - as soon as I have recovered from last night's celebrations.

Michael,

David Martin, the software guru here at EO, has done most of the work I think you want to do. He has developed skins for Ozi CE that privide buttons to do the things I think you want to do.

Have a look here. It's only $6.00.

If you download the screen designer from the Ozi site you can tweak David's files to suit yourself, but at least you won't be re-inventing the wheel.

Cheers and HNY

Hi again Frank,

I am Michael, but everybody calls me Willie - from my surname... I am happy with anything thanks.

I just received and installed the IT Beyond update for CE. It works really well.

When it opens, the screen is the START UP screen (about 8 black squares with menu options on it). Is there a way to make it open straight onto the map ?

Thanks a lot,
Willie.

Hi Willie,

I'm an Android user, not familiar with the CE version - there may be differences of which I am unaware, so I can't answer your question right away.

I cannot see any screen on my Android device that fits your description. Can you post a screenshot? If your device is not internet enabled take a photo of the CE screen on a smartphone or camera and post that.

My Android version always opens on the last screen that I used and in the middle of the last map I used, until it finds its first fix when it then finds the most detailed map at the fix.

Cheers

Frank,
Here are the photos of the screens.
- The first screen is the black menu screen with the white boxes
- The second screen to open is the one which gives me a choice of which screen I want to have showing
- The third screen is the map I would like it to open in when turned on. It now takes me through a couple of menu selections to get here.
Thanks for having a go at this,
Willie.

Willie,

Had just about finished a follow-up yesterday and then the power went off. Bugger!

I don't see that first screen on Ozi Android.Mine goes straight to your third pic.

I cannot see any options in Ozi Android or Ozi Android's screen designer to solve your problem.

You might be able to do something via the Ozi CE screen designer (link).

Maybe another Ozi CE user can offer a suggestion?

Cheers

Hello

I am no expert with screen designer and dont have a CE device to play with but think all you may have to do is change the order of the pages (i.e. "screens") so that Page 1 is the page you want to see first. I could be wrong on this but that's my guess (but worth a try and pretty simple to do from memory).

Also you can turn off unwanted pages via the menu in OziCe - cant remember where. Saves cycling through unwanted pages.

Cheers

Hi Frank, I installed the software "Launchpad" originally when the CE was put onto the unit. Could this be causing the problem ?

Hi Greg, I will read the destructions and see if I can figure out how to change the order.

Thank you both for your help.

Hi Willie,

I'm not familiar with Launchpad at all. A bit of googling found some very limited information that suggests it is a program launch configuration tool for Win CE 6. That further suggests that there may be settings in Launchpad to adjust the behaviour.

Is Launchpad necessary or is it an option? If the latter, perhaps you could try uninstalling it (providing you have the files to re-install if you don't want to make an irreversible change.)

Sorry mate, clutching at straws here :-(

Cheers
