Any Information on condition of the roadhouse at Kumarina(between Newman and Meekatharra) and the Goldfields Hwy from Meekatharra to Wiluna, would be much appreciated if anyone has been through these areas as of late. No doubt we will have many more questions as the trip goes on.Look forward to any replies and any information given will be much appreciated.

Regards

Brendan & Tracey.

Gidday

Wiluna - Meekatharra is generally a good dirt road with occasional sealed sections to provide a safe passing opportunity if you are behind a slower vehicle.

I have never stopped at Kumarina, not because I didn't want to, just had no need.

Cheers

Brendan

Just had another thought. If you are travelling from Newman to Wiluna you can save a lot by taking the Wiluna North Road, also known I think as Neds Creek Road.

I have not been that way but someone I know was on it last year and said it was ok. But probably best avoided if there has been rain.

Cheers

Haven't been on the Meeka -Wiluna Road for about 50 years but called into Kumarina last July and had a real beaut burger, lot's stopped, fuelling up and getting tucker like myself. Place is a bit rough but it's out of town a bit.

The Great Northern Highway is a very well used road but in between the 405 km's from Meeka to Capricorn is only the one roadhouse Kumerina.
we fuelled up at Meekatharra and again at Capricorn Roadhouse just short of Newman with 75 litres. that was 17th July 14, my notes say it was windy, we stopped at a big stop with toilets about 150 km's north of Meeka. they also refer to a truck every couple of minutes.
Don't be put off it's a big, long, wide road.
I always carry 2 twenty litre drums of diesel as I hate bleeding the system. Had to once on a 354 Perkins; took me ages.

We called in there a few years ago to find that they were out of diesel and the truck wasn't due in for a couple of days...so be prepared for something like that. We weren't but managed to just get to the next fuel place with the red light in in the vehicle...just!
It was a bit stressful!
Didn't actually go into the roadhouse so can't help there.
regards,
Heather

I have been using the Wiluna Nth Rd (Neds Creek Rd) since 1976 when it was a winding 2 wheel track. Took my Mazda 808 through there several times!
Nowdays its a good, fairly straight gravel road, but still have to take care around creek crossings and corners (like any gravel rd) Can be a bit dusty, so avoid if your van doesnt seal. (and after rain) Otherwise a piece of cake! I sit on 90 pulling my small van on the straighter sections of road. Last time I was through there was July 2014.
Kumarina is usuallly a good roadhouse, but I usually get to Capricorn for refuel; its a bit cheaper there and suits my trip schedule.. Sometimes call in to Kumarina for a feed, and its good!
I have been past Kumarina once when there was no diesel. Unsure what the issue was but it didnt affect me.
Capricorn Roadhouse will sometimes alert when there is no fuel at Kumarina.

Trevor/Verna,
How much time would it save using Wiluna Nth Rd compared to Goldfields Hwy.

Probably only about an hour in it, given bitumen V gravel.
Without towing, I would do 110 for the most part, and backing off when hazards are approaching.

I always like the gravel providing its not too full of corrugations. Tend to see more, easier (and more inviting) to pull over etc.
Its not a guiet road either; having a bit of traffic on it.

I go past Kumarina every week although I don't usually eat there (all my food is bought at the supermarket-saves me heaps). It's a "Mum and Pop" business with several staff to do the heavy lifting. The facilities aren't the most modern but I always try to support small places like this rather than Capricorn Roadhouse 170km up the road. They have donger style accommodation, donger style showers and donger style laundry facilities. They have their own generator for power and water is pumped from a bore. Several months ago Telstra switched on mobile phone service. There's is a kitchen/dining for the usual roadhouse meals and a bar (no tap beer, just can/stubby/bottle) and a swimming pool for guests.
It ain't fancy but it provides a service in the middle of the long stretch between Meeka and Newman and I think everyone travelling the Gt Northern Hwy should support it because if it goes it will leave a huge hole.
