Hi Guy's
I would appreciate help on this problem. It seems as thou my GQ Patrol has developed vibration which appears at various speeds. It feels like it's coming from the front....who knows....Very noticeable in 5th gear. Have had rear uni's replaced, steering damper tightened as
well different tyres to eliminate the tyres. Nobody can find the problem. It feels as thou the problem disappears when the clutch is pushed in..Eg rolling. Let the clutch out and it's back. some people have have said wheel bearing others said front uni's. Can anbody help.....This is very annoying. At the moment the fourby is like a constant vibrator!!!!
Just don't want it to be a diff or gearbox....CRY CRY
I look forward to your suggestions

Rockhopper,
Check the rear tail shaft, could be out of balance or a slight bend.
When the after market
suspension was installed did they space the gear box down? That is all I can think of that has not been said already.

I second your thoughts/advice 100%.
A vehicle I have had for 20 years from new and still have, developed the exact same symtoms very early in its life
Eventually tracked it to the 'tailshaft area'. New Uni's were a help in the first instance and a balance with large 'lumps' welded all over the place nearly fixed it and that was as good as it got for many years.
(I would remove and replace the Uin's and have a Machine
shop with balance equipment do the balance).
Anyway a Uni collapse and a bad attitude about a DYI job gave me the incentive to locate a DRIVE TRAIN specialist in
Melbourne who supplied and fitted new Uni's. When commencing the balance test, rang and informed me that there was a massive bend in the shaft that 'someone' had tried to fix by welding'lumps' all over it.
They straightened it and added one tiny dob of weld and it has been 100% ever since.
By the way, the specialists reckon the T/shaft had been like that since new. No doubt another BORG-WARNER midnight special like the gear box was.

You only have to space the gearbox down on SWB's...

Truckster,
Because Rockhopper didn't say if it was a LWB or SWB only that he had a virabation. He also didn't say that he had raised
suspension, but going on his
forum name, I assumed he would have raised
suspension. On some LWB if the vehicle is lifted a fair bit and a vibration is felt than the spacers can help.

Wayne, your comment "space the gearbox down" has me wondering. Would that not put an uneven strain on the engine mounts? Or am I missing something here?
Just curious,

Klaus,
The engine mounts would have a bit more strain but the spacers are only 6mm or 12mm at the most. The distance between the front engine mounts and the cross member that the gear box sits on is a fair bit so the amount of strain is small. The cross member that the gear box sit on is spaced down at the chassis rails and the gear box mount stays with the cross member. This sometimes stops the vibration in the tail shaft, by making the angle from the diff to the gear box as flat as possible.
On the early Troopies they used a double uni joint to get the angle they wanted between the gear box and diff.

Had a couple of LWB that had a vibration and this seemed to fix the problem.

I figured it was tailshaft so i decided to book it in for a shaft balance or repair, while i was on the phone, my wife looked at me kinda funny.
After i got off the phone, she told me NOT to get it fixed. When i asked why not, she said it was sthe ONLY reason why she came on the trips, she got off on it. Here i was thinking that smile was cause she was happy to be here with me !
