The 1992 1hdt is getting a bit fumey changed the air cleaner and fuel filter its a bit better looking at fitting a catch can to the breather line to clean up the oil film into the air intake. The engine is running ok 409,000ks uses about 1lt of oil between changes and pulls our 21ft van ok any help on the catch can thanks mal b

Pro-vent from Western filters is a good model and very efficient. . I believe you can buy a complete kit for your model. Simple to fit as well. Put one on my Pajero and it works well.

HMM...why not just install a hose/pipe to the breather and run straight down towards the ground like it used to be done??? I have done this to my 97 diesel Patrol and no more hassles. The hose ends about 6 inches below front axle...and no dust or water goes back up it.
If it is good enough for a 2009 Mack prime mover to have this system...its good enough for my nearly 18 year old Datto hey.

Cheers Keith

Why not run a hose to the ground like how it use to be done ? Maybe because these days we know better and we are not suppose to be venting into the atmosphere there are enough pollutants in the world already causing a massive increase in the amount of people getting cancer and lung disease problems so every little bit helps for our future generations that's why some responsible people fit a catch can and plumb it back into the sump which also keep the oil mist out of your motor and will help prevent carbon build up especially inside the intake manifold which I would recommend inspecting and cleaning out if required.

My Provent is setup with a hose to near the cahssis rail and a tap.
I just drain it every oil / filter service (5k) and can just be put back in the engine if desired, or in with old oil to recycle.

It's only about 400ml over that distance, but much better than in your intake system mixed with reticulated particulates.

Funny though, I never have to top off oil between services, even when I was doing oil / filter at 10k.

Wow, Les, that 400ml is a LOT of blow-by oil in 5000km. Certainly much better "catched" than being recirculated through the intake system. I imagine if you didn't have the can your poor vehicle would be pretty asthmatic by now. Have you ever checked the intake system, particularly the inlet manifold for cooked up crap?

Cheers

Oh bugger, I think I mis-advised there.
It is actually about 40ml on a trip Adelaide to Brisbane (a little over 2000km).
So more like 100ml at 5k, 200ml at 10k.

OK, Les,

Still waiting for the first drop to appear from my new BT50. 5000km on the clock, but only 500 with the catch can. Nothing apparent on the filter yet - long may it stay that way!!!

Cheers

The filter has to wet up before it starts collecting, filter (if white paper) gradually turns blackish, then wet looking before it starts dripping.

Les,
Should I wet it with clean oil to make it start collecting sooner (if it needs to)? No instructions came with my kit. Just watch the video, they said. Video was fitting only, nothing about the filter itself.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies, the last reply covered one of my quires about when to empty as i was not going to return to sump that will depend on how much oil is being bypassed. Thanks again mal b
