hi rex, caravan park is first in best dressed and down by the creek is the same, if you had a favourite spot by the river my guess would be to arrive on the wednsday. i arrived thursday evening last year and the park was 60%, come friday and the other 40% arrived, but really as showers and facilities go it wasn`t to bad if you picked your time, and it is all for a good cause (flying doctors) and a good time. cheers rob

So........Who is going?????
I've organised my leave (4 wks) so I can take 4-5 days to get there from
Melbourne via
Adelaide,
Marree and the track. Arrive Wednesday, stay 'till the Monday/Tuesday.
After the races I was thinking of Innaminka then head for
Brisbane LCMP (total driving ~ 4 days to get there + 1 Day in Innaminka). 3-4 days in LCMP.
Then, time/energy/money permitting Fraser Is. for a week or so, then
home to
Melbourne via Newell (driving 2 days).
Total 11 days driving, 17 days R&R.
Does this sound like a reasonable itinerary, or should I drop either Fraser Is. or LCMP?
Any comments from more seasoned travellers greatly appreciated.
Anyone wishing to tag along/convoy up there from
Melbourne or any intermediate point also more than welcome.

Gary, you are welcome to drop in for a cuppa on your way from
Adelaide to
Marree. We should be
home but contact me closer to the time through my website.
Cheers

Truckster,
That would make for a change.......me leading the trip LOL. Would be good to have you along if you can make it.
The issue with the MT Centipedes is something I would like to find out. I know they are not that good for sand, but how much of an issue would it really be?? Would a set of Secondair beadlocks help by allowing a more appropriate tyre pressure? I guess the real question is how much of a difference does tyre tread pattern really make if you can sucessfully run pressureds in the mid teens? (for the info of others, they have a tread pattern similar to Wrangler MTR's)
Willem,
I would love a cuppa, a chat, and a bit of local info.
Re my original question, does my itinerary seem too rushed?

Gary,
Just go with some AT's. second handers would do. or your HT stockies. You would screw the pedes to start with.
You would ruin your Cents with that many road klms to start with, the best part of any tire is when new, specifically with MT's and higher..

Thanks Frank

Hello Rex, you can legally
camp anywhere other than inside the town boundary - that means from the
grid on the eastern side of the town - along the common towards the Diamantina River (please note it's not a creek although you could be referring to the Billabong). No, the Caravan Park is not necessarily full.

I now know who to look for when I eventually get back to
Birdsville thanks to David & Michelle. seeing as how my travel plans were ruined by the Patrol blowing up I might see if I can get up for the races.

camped near common in 2000 worst site ever due to millions of burrs in tent clothes bedding etc had to throw out some clothes, probably better if i had used large ground sheet.Tents in park were touching each other no privacy at all when i was there.
Had a great time, great museum dont miss it,also t shirts, hats etc were half price on last day.

Hey Rex, I was there in 2001, had a fantastic time.
Birdsville Pub rocks, great time every night. I camped in the C'Van Park, wasnt too cramped and met some extremely nice people. The facility's are worth it at the CVan Park, just get in early. The races were fun but I think Brophy's boxing tent was a highlight. Have fun!!!
