Hi all ,
Has anybody explored the Harts Range area or have does anybody have any good info on this fascinating area of old mines and
fossicking adventures . I am thinking of spending some time there on my may to the
Kimberley via the Tanami .
Thanks ,

goodday willie
we stayed at gemtree a couple of yrs ago and went on there digging trips was good but if you know what your about there is plenty of areas to go to but i think you need a permit there are also some old gold mines with a long history at arltunga if you go there go to the
visitor centre and have a good read we spent over an hour in there some of our predecessors were very strong willed but its a great area
steve
ps the roads over the hills are not much good for towing especially a van

Willie,
Things have changed a bit in the past few years but I am sure that you can still access most of the areas where you find the garnets. I drove through there last November. The Zircon field is no more as there is a humungous big mining operation happening. You have to get a visitors
fossicking permit from the Dept of Mines in
Alice Springs. Probably costs around $10 or so.
Gemtree is the place most people stay when
fossicking but if you are self sufficient you can
bush camp.
We went
fossicking out there in the 90's and dug up ring quality garnets. Missus had a stone faceted by the Gemtree mob and set in to a ring. She was pleased as punch.
Cheers,

Thanks for the info guys . I have actually stayed at Gemtree myself but did not have Willems luck . My kids had a great time though .
I was after information more on the
old mine areas than on Gemtree , but it looks
like no one has been into that area . There was one very short mention of a couple of lines in the threads , but very little really .
Looks like I will have to find out and come back with all the info for everyone .
Willie
