Traveling to Menindee

Hello Greg,

Went down that way years ago, sealed road from Broken Hill to Menindee but don't know about the rest.
There is or was a place on the lakes called Sunset Strip; holiday homes for the miners from Broken Hill. I think I read somewhere that the place was deserted because the lake had dryed up during the long drought . We don't get all the Eastern States news over here in the west the lake might be full again; I hope it is as the country around there is pretty hungry except for the Darling.
I'm sure someone will add to what I've said.
How's the BT 50 going?
We have a 2012 Ranger; done 80000 and going well. Towed our van around Australia last year.

Hello Greg,
I live in Broken Hill.
It is always worth a trip to Broken Hill.
Give it about a week to learn everything and learn the history of the town.
Menindee Lakes are dry but still worth a couple of nights to have a good look around.
Call into the tourist centre in Menindee for maps and info of area.
Dirt roads do get rough so slow down and enjoy it.
Kinchega woolshed is a must.

Free camping around the dry Lake Pamamaroo.

Pooncarie Road varies from graded dirt to rough but is travelled daily.

It's either tar or good dirt road. Can be exciting if it rains. Some of the older maps show fuel at Pooncarie but that had shut down last I was thru there.

I passed that way a couple of weeks ago.

lake Menindee is dry but stop in at Sunset Strip and imagine what it can be. It is not abandoned but there are only a handful of permanent residents with the rest being holiday homes


If you don't mind caravan parks Copi Hollow has water and you can camp on the grass on the waters edge. I was there mid week so it was quiet, with nearly all the permanent camps empty.


I wanted to head south to Wenworth via Pooncarie but there were road closures somewhere there so I went west through the national park to the Silver City Highway. The road through the park is good dirt but there are signs it would be tricky after rain.
The woolshed is indeed a highlight.

it was my first visit to the area and it seems out there you need plan B and C if rain is around.

Enjoy the drive, I certainly did.
