Interesting story
link here
I've a vague recollection of hearing about this before. and now it appears it's a case of the mysterious South Australia geoglyph being wiped off the map.
cheers

Yep, we have seen it from plane in 2001 it was mind-blowingly big and beautiful ... still have photos and brochure given to us by our wonderful pilot.

Hi Duncan
Flew over it a few weeks ago, very hard to make out the shape. nature is taking its course.
I wasn't that bothered. When you think about it, it was large scale graffiti. And is graffiti art or vandalism?

So do you also think that aboriginal art is graffiti or vandalism as
well, just much older though. To me, provided it isn't damaging anything there prior to it then it's just as valid.

Good question Phil.
Their cultural significance lifts aboriginal art way beyond graffiti.
a kid with a spray can tagging a train or a wall is vandalism.
The rest probably falls somewhere in between.
Marree man was clever, no doubt about that. But I guess I am happy that it appears it caused no lasting damage to a sensitive environment .
Cheers

In another 20, 000 years todays graffiti taging, modern public art etc will likely be seen in much the same way and will be studied just the same. Do we have the right to destroy it and deny future generations the chance to appreciate it just because someone now doesn't like it? Too much has already been lost in past generations because someone didn't think it worth preserving.

Story goes it might have been created by white man (maybe even Yanks at that !) about 20 or so years ago, although the origins are still a mystery to this day.
But considering it is almost gone now, this is most likely the scenario.
Wiki has some good info about it . . .

Last year I heard that the
Marree Man was going to be restored, but haven't heard anything since. My other half flew over it a few weeks ago & said it was pretty indistinct.
