Can anyone recommend a brand of battery AM FM radio that will give us decent reception while in the more remote areas of Australia. TIA

http://www.amradioantennas.com check out this site. I purchased the radio and loop antenna for a recent kimberley trip, both worked as described by the bloke who owns the site.

From previous threads on this site, Yvonne, some have had success with Tecsun brand.

I found them on eBay, a variety of sizes, types and prices. As mentioned above, the loop antennas work the best, and you don't have to fiddle around with a long wire, hooked up to a convenient tree(if there's any trees where you're camped).

We travelled with friends recently who have a car radio with short wave. They listened to Alice Springs right across the Simpson, while we had to resort to the "static station", or the iPod.

Replacement in car or stand alone? I replaced my factory one with a Pioneer that also has short wave, very good in the western deserts for SW Alice Springs and Katherine if fact it out preforms my Codan listening SW channels. Works best with the AM/SW antenna from Mobile One. The seagan recievers are also top end as stand alone. With a lenght of wire attached to antenna you can listen world wide.

I tried 2 different model Sangean radios, both of which I returned after finding them hopeless for reception.
The best that I have found is a 40 year old National Panasonic AM/FM transistor radio which is much better than the new Sangeans.

Shaker,

I am a National Panasonic fan too. I have quite a collection dating back to the early 60s. They still perform extremely well but lack the digital readout of some of the newer radios. Amongst many others, I have a couple of RF3000s and RF5000s which are huge but excellent radios.

I also collect older Sony's and have examples of the CRF 5100, CRF 150, 160 and 230.

After using the above its difficult to enjoy the small modern plasticky offerings.

Having said that, Sangean usually reviews quite well. Shortwave radio reviews. It makes me wonder if it was the conditions that gave you such a bad experience.

It seems like the older receivers were fitted with better aerials, it was honestly 'no contest' between the old National Panasonic & both the Sangeans. The retailer also said that I was t the first to return them for disappointing performance.

Yvonne,

FM is VHF and pretty much line of sight (except in exceptional conditions when "ducting" can occur. So it won't work when you are remote.
