Hey Gang,

Dad's HJ60 with 378,000 kms has cracked rings in #4 and 5 cylinders it is a 2H. Compression is OK on the others 340 - 380. What to do? Rebuil;d time no doubt, but who makes a good kit besides going factory Toyota? the short block kit is avaliable from toyota (complete, but no head, pump etc) but major $$$. Does a guy have to bore out the block typcally when this happens - or do you just have to open it up "wait and see"???

ALso, any truth to the rumor that Belton now makes ARB OME springs? or did they always?

cheers!

At that mileage and cracked rings the bore will be marked for sure so have the motor rebuilt by an engine reconditioner and forget the toyota parts dept.
If it is an early 2H it might have sleeves, but later ones will need to be bored and if too bad will need to be bored and sleeved.
Did exactly the same thing at 420,000 ks and the rebuild cost just over $3000, inc head, plus R&R, plus a few bits and pieces including a clutch, and reco injectors, make sure you have injectors done as if they are worn and the wrong amount of fuel is being injected it can damage your new engine.
Best of luck, do a lot of ringing around for prices as they vary a lot, and if in Adeliade get back to me and I will put you onto a good reconditioner.

1/2 your luck i paid 3k just for a head and sideplate(fitted) although it was a brand spanking new head (didnt have time to shop around as it was a week before my big holiday) regardless your price sounds cheap or is that just the price I pay for living in the bush

Hi Davoe
Dropped the motor off with head seperated, and it was bored and 2 cyls had to be sleeved, and rest reconditioned, $2400 something dollars, and head was done, new valves and guides, crack tested and faced etc etc $600 something, 18 months ago.
Had injectors reco-ed and new clutch and bits and pieces less than $4 big ones, for whole job, did R&R myself. Goin like a charm! Just starting to let go about 90,000 ks.

Hi johnny,
If you do go the whole hog on the rebuild be very careful with rebuilders as specifications and tolerances on diesels are much tighter than petrol engines especially oil ring end gap (due to compression ratios). I have a HJ60 sahara manual with 229k kms and an 80 1HDT GXL and in looking for the latter quite a few had been rebuilt due to bearing failure and all rebuilt ones except one had copious amounts of blowby at 20 -50k kms.

Thanks for the advice you guys. I wasnt aware that the early 2H might be sleeved. $3K sounds sure like a good deal. We were toying with the idea of taking out the old and swapping in an import (used) motor from Japan, but then again no guarantees with that....
