Blog Comment: Aussie Adventures 2018 Pt 1

So when do you actually leave? I have a Yr 12 child but certainly not finished yet. I admire your patience to take 3 teenagers and to put the time into schooling them on the road also. I'm interested to know how more about the home schooling please if you wouldn't mind sharing how you organised that. It's actually a really good route you've plotted too.

Hi Michelle, Fortunately my wife is a teacher which helps but we just let the school know our plans well in advance and they have supplied books, assignments and websites that the boys will use. They also have a school connect program were the teacher posts information and talks to the kids in a on line forum. The Year 7schooling is pretty straight forward learning but the year 9 is a little more specific. We also have them keep a journal which they do. To be honest we do try and structure a certain time each day for schooling but once on the road this is often not practical. Whilst in the car we test them/play games etc on time/distance/Kms travelled which is good for mental maths and other memory type games. As for the 18yr old she will be in charge of the Technology/Free WIFI sites side of things(facebook posts etc)Ha Ha. As we are only away for 4 months we are ineligible to enrol in SIDE which is Schools of Isolated and Distance Education this is available if travelling for 6 months or more and would be a lot more structured. Travelling with kids, is at times quite tough but the good times and memories that they and you will have far out weigh those tough days. We will be leaveing this April.

Thanks for the reply. Sounds like you've got it covered. We have a Yr 9 and and Yr 12 both at school in Perth too so can totally relate to what lies ahead for you. I just didn't understand how your Yr 12 was finished if she was doing ATAR as you seem to indicate but the school system is too confusing for me to understand these days. Best of luck to you all and enjoy it all.

Ex-teacher, (secondary IT and Industrial Arts) and I believe that your kids (unless in their final years at high school) will benefit far more form the incidental learning that they gain by travelling than they would have by staying in school!

That may sound sacreligious, but the wider learning, socialisation, meeting (and hopefully making friends with) people of all different backgrounds, becoming a part of a team, etc, etc, etc are far more important than the marks they might have gotten in a Maths or computing test! Oh, the applied mathematics of caravanning, driving, observation in the world are far more relevant, too!
