We were there a few weeks ago, very busy town this time of year. Long line up for fuel and store
was busy as. You couldn't go wrong with a business there, but it really is the back of nowhere. Michael

If there is truth in the statement that they are retiring then the Lyndhurst pub will be up for sale too seeing they own them both.

Reckon it must be tough running a business in such an isolated town. Stayed in the Drover's Rest Caravan Park about 18 months ago and was told they preferred to be paid using plastic as cash had to be taken to Port Augusta to be deposited.

Is there a connection (financial or ownership) between the Marree Hotel and Mungerannie Hotel?

I think most of those types of pub and station pubs are for sale a lot of the time, just has to be the right $$$ :)
Wonder what the asking price is ?

It would be VERY seasonal with travellers, like Birdsville.
You would have to be on the ball to take full advantage of March to November say, and more so at the peak traffic with BV races, BRB, Marree camel cup, Finke races etc, to rake it in and make it sustainable for the quiet time . . . there would be a little local custom of course, but it is a big pub and high overheads running it.

Of course wet weather road closures at various times of year and trapped tourists would really be a godsend for the pub too, they have a large amount of accomodation right down to camping.

Not sure how long the current licensees have been there, but good on them to finally get away from the 24/365 responsibilities and enjoy some retirement.

they've been there about 5-6 years....always good food and service with them...I reckon 5 years and you'd be burnt out.

Agree, treat like a 7 day deli ! (When they existed :/)

Have had a few bevvies in the front bar and had a nice lunch in the dining room, very pleasant.
The historical items / hanging framed prints etc are great to spend looking through, along with all the street memorabilia, Herrgott Springs, etc.

We were there fro the Camel Cup a few years ago, en route to BV and a crossing, was quite a fun time.

Judging by the Schnitzels that were completely over cooked and black when we were there, they could replace Leigh Creek as a source of coal.

I have eaten there a few times and it was always OK. I can't remember what I had but more than likely steak and veggies.

Every pub in Australia , be it in the middle of 'nowhere' or in a major city is always for sale , they may not be advertised but you walk - drive - fly in with the right 'offer' and you can own a pub , the hours for owner / operators is the killing point , yes money can be made but sooner rather than later the long days - nights become a chore rather than the 'money making fun' owning an outback pub is dreamed to be.
