My mate has a 60 diff and the spider gears have given up the ghost.

I was wondering if a 79 center will bolt in ?. Or maybe what other diffs will work as a replacement because i cannot find a 60 diff for cheap in perth anywhere

Thanks heaps.

That would be a good question to ask on LCOOL.org

I used to own a HJ61 and remember the 80 series has different splines on the side gears. That said I would doubt if a 79 series would fit and also the splines will be different number. Can’t imagine they went back to 60 series spline size and numbers of splines. Again from memory I seem to recall the length of the axles is also different. That means more investigation because even if the spiders are the same the side gear would be damaged too and all 4 would require replacement.
Maybe I am posing too many abstacles but they seem to present themselves because of he ever changing specs of vehicles which seem to be same/similar but the engineering isn’t.

If i recall correctly 60 , 45 late , 47 were interchangeable
after that i don't think ever the centre housing was the same .

yes the diff centres on the 60 are the same as in a hj47
Only axles and diff housings are different.
60series are wider and also come with self adjustable rear brakes.

If it was me
I would never buy a 2nd hand diff centre
Only once its been on the bench and had the preload checked... and whole lot checked for a bent crownwheel.
Takes nothing to destroy a diff centre if it isnt in spec.
Let alone the age of all the parts inside
Or even wear and tear.
Ive done 2 diff centres.
One because they didnt shim the crownwheel up enough it only made half contact on the pinion
Other was just heavy off road use out of a 25year old hj47
If anything
Swap the diff centres out from the front to the back if he can do the labour.
Might be a little stuffing around
But it will keep him going for a bit.
Save some coin and get it recoed
But specifically ask to have the gears meshing as deep as possible.
Standard allows only 50% teeth contact

if the spider gears havent chipped and bent the crownwheel
You could get a auto locker put in
And it replaces the spider gears.
Bonus is you have a locking diff
But on the cheap end.... its a diff lock you cant turn on or off
Its auto
On the pricier end of the
Either harrop.. tjm... or arb. Do manual switching lockers

MM
60 series diffs don't have shims on the crownwheel, only shims are on the pinion shaft. The preload of the crownwheel is done by adjusing the side screw cups for pinion engagement and backlash.
It would be hard to get it to the position of only half a tooth engagement, there isn't that much movement possible. Whoever set up the diff probably didn't set the engagement of the teeth right at the start.
I agree if the crownwheel isn't running true and backlash correct, the diff will be noisey or fail.

A diff with half tooth engagement will allow the pinion to turn approx 1/3 of a turn (because of the hypoid design) before teeth touch,ie, enormous backlash and so would be very obvious before purchase.

76lifted - there's a bloke in Ellenbrook wrecking a HJ60. Have you tried him?

Wrecking HJ60 Ellenbrook
