There is always a lot of discussion about mobile coverage when travelling and using an alternate mobile phone service. I recently discovered Moose Mobile for some relatives of mine and this company provides some very competitive month to month plans as well as 12 month contracts. Moose Mobile uses the entire Optus network. I know when my current plan with Optus expires next July who I will be switching to.
Here's a link to their website https://moosemobile.com.au/plans

Might pay to also look at boost that uses the Telstra 4g network. I pay 12.5 a month which is $150 upfront for 120gb of data (12gb a month) unlimited calls/texts and international calls to selected countries.

Eagle, I think Steve's suggestion was for an "alternate" service to supplement a primary on (presumably) Telstra in some form. While not necessarily the best Optus-based plans, they ARE available month-to-month and can be initiated for the trip and dropped on return.

If people value having maximum cellphone coverage when travelling our vast brown land (satphones notwithstanding), a mix of Telstra and Optus based services is the route I choose and recommend.

Also, ALL Optus resold services have access to their entire network - Optus don't play wholesale-vs-retail coverage games like Telstra.

PS do you only have data for 10 months a year? ("12GB/month")

Zippo, the 12 gb/month should have been 10 but I screwed up.

The boost mobile seems to still give me 100% access to the telstra network except for 5G which isn't in the equation at all. BTW Boost plans can be month to month.

Yes, a mix would be nice for those that can afford them, but I will stay with the one that can give the best overall coverage at the same price.
