Chris - What item is made of vinyl on the front of your van? I'm thinking the bumper - but bumpers aren't normally made from vinyl.

Before you try to repair or paint anything that is made from a "plastic", you need to precisely identify the material it's made from, to ensure that you choose the correct product to repair it or paint it.

Cracks need to be glued up prior to painting, and the area sanded back, before any paint is applied.

If you just paint over cracks, they will rapidly reappear.

Cheers, Ron.

Thanks for the reply Ron
The vinyl material is attach to the front of the van to prevent rocks hitting the front of it.

Chris. If cracked it cannot be repaired. Replacement? Painting is if no use as above. To good vinyl, people apply Armor All. That is the worst thing to do, it ensures cracking will happen. Although not what the company leads you to believe.
Apply Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly to vinyl as it replaces the lost hydrocarbons from the vinyl. A silicon substance is not good, ever. Vinyl is made from hydrocarbons, Armor All is not.

Why not replace it with aluminium checker plate either plain or anodised black.

Chris - The best advice is already given above - just strip the vinyl off and replace it.

Cheers, Ron.

Just have a good think about aluminium, as many a back window on the tow vehicle has been broken by hard aluminium fronted vans.

I removed the vinyl from a friends van and installed the Silver version of the Clark Rubber product below, it looked great, helped to sell the van. Its only a meter wide that could be a limiting factor. Not sure whether you can buy a 2.4m length maybe you purchase 3m.

I thought my purchase was wider as I sold the left over to another caravan owner for a similar job.

Cannot recall whether I used the 3mm or 5mm, most likely the 3mm.

G'day Peter,
Good solution for my problem.
Did you find it necessary to use glue at all? I'm presuming the rubber is somewhat heavier than the vinyl.

Thanks

Did not use Glue, we

Left the vinyl in the sun for a while ( easier to use)

Stapled it at the top
Stapled at the passenger side
Stretched and then stapled at the drivers side
Then stapled the bottom section ( Mate put a staple thru his mobile phone during this effort)

ie its best as a 2 person exercise, one stretches, the other staples.

Then replaced the Top/bottom trims and screwed down the ( previously lifted up) side trims.
