Hi all.

Hope this is not too convoluted but bare with me for a bit.

We currently run a Samsung tablet with no SIM card when we travel. Have EO Traveller on it using the tablet inbuilt GPS to log our travels.

We add points of interest and waypoints as we go to our personal places and wait till we get home to hook up to our wifi and upload all the info to the EO server.

We have traveller also on our apple iphone, enabling this to record our position. The phone sends our position in bundles of data to the EO server when we have Telstra coverage. Wait till we get home to save the file and name it.

Have had a few issues using the phone for EO Traveller losing positions from time to time resulting in a straight line display rather than following the road. Has happened when we were using the phone with Google maps at the same time and on one occasion when we received a phone call.

We were given a Telstra prepaid 4GX Wi-Fi Plus device that has a pre-paid sim card when we moved into our new house. Telstra had issues hooking up our landline so this was to use till the landline issue was sorted.

Still have the device but haven't used it for some years. Thinking about maybe getting a prepaid SIM for it and using it in the car hooking up our tablet to it by WiFi. Tablet and Telstra device would then send our tracking data to the EO server without needing to use the phone.

All the above has eventually gets me to my question. If the SIM in my Telstra device is being used solely for EO Tracking on my tablet, how much data would I need to purchase for say a 28 day period. Our last trip covered around 5500K in 21 days. I realise each trip would be different but is it possible to get a Kb/Km value I could use to sort out data useage.
Thanks,

Hi mepvic

Perhaps you should ask Michelle how much data you will use when using it.

On the other had, if you use the pre paid SIM, you must remember that if you do not keep it topped up, and it is not used within 6 months, you will lose your SIM for not being active.

We use a pre paid Telstra WiFi device like you and 12 months credit and that gives us 40gb of data.

All the best with your query

Hi Guys,

There was a previous post regarding this issue a few weeks back. I think Michelle answered the question then. If my memory serves me correctly, the problem occurs when using your phone and Google Maps. When you lose signal, you also lose your connection to Google Maps, so it cannot track you when it does not have signal.

Send a request to the Help Desk outlining your issue, I am sure Michelle or David can explain it better than I can.
Macca.

Thanks gents. I’ll try Michelle in a few days.
That previous post you mention was from me. Now trying to work my way around my phone issue.

For anyone else curious about this, David has supplied the following info so whilst we've discussed this off Forum with mepvic, I'll post it here for reference to others:

The Tracker feature (whether used in the Traveller app or standalone Tracker app) will use an avg of 3750 characters/bytes per km.

For syncing tracking data for a trip of 8000km this would calculate to a data transfer of 28MB. Tiny!

Thanks Michelle. How good is all that for so little data.

We will be heading away again in Jun/Jul/Aug all going well hopefully up to Alice, down the Great Central to Laverton in your neck of the woods, up through Marble Bar then across the Gibb River Rd yet again. Probably continue to Kakadu and then somehow back to Vic.

Think we will go for a SIM only deal for the tablet rather than the phone approach we currently use this time. All deals have well in excess of the data I need for the tablet so just a matter of picking one. Amaysim have a 6Gb deal for $20/month but they use Optus. Telstra best deal looks to be 10Gb for $25/month. For the extra $5/month may as well get the better Telstra coverage.

Looking forward to your new EO Topo maps.

Yes I've no idea why some people have a perception that using the app online uses a lot of data - it is designed to be very efficient with data usage in all aspects. However - battery use is high due to the use of GPS - easily solved with a charging cable. Enjoy your trip!

A USB with 2.4A output helps enormously too.
