G'day, a question on spot lights.
Anyone have experience of Teralume Icon or Stedi type X pro lights?
Can't decide which ones to get.

Thanx
Peter.

G'day Peter.
Having a colour temp of 5600 to 6000K is ok, better the lower number for long drive times for lower eye stress.
I have had lights on vehicles for a few decades and find having a great long distance of beam is ok for the Nullabor and roads with no bends but found mostly that isn't what is reality. I didn't ever need to see the next mountain or even the one further on. Having a LED light system, ie, light bar which extends to a couple or three times your reaction AND braking distance, is all you will ever need. Well illuminated at the sides recommended. At $500 to $700 a hit is extreme money for the usability. If you want the aesthetic look of them well ok but a much cheaper light bar of suitable distance, ie combo beam will do all you need and the huge savings can be spent on other goodies. One of them advertises a projectile hit and reports it didn't crack the lens. I wonder in their testing, if they whacked a kangaroo as that is more likely than a hail of small pellets. If after a Roo strike, ie, You strike it, a cheaper lamp will not find you crying too much.

I tend to agree with RMD. I bought a Stedi 3301 light bar & find it more than suitable for my driving.

Ive got the Stedi type X pro lights on my 80 series, super bright with good distance but surprisingly the spread isn't very wide which is ok for highway but off road id like a better spread pattern out the sides. They do vibrate a bit but I blame the skinny mounting tabs on my old ARB bar for that.
If I had my time again I'd probably go the Bushranger dimmable lights just for something different.

I have BCF's Budget XTM 9 inch spotties on 3 of our vehicles.
They are more than good enough with decent spread and throw .
They have survived gazillions of corrugations and immersion in creeks or mudholes.
They are under $200 so it is not the end of the world if they get stolen in Alice or destroyed by a roo inLongreach .

Peter,

I procrastinated for some weeks about which of these 2 lights to purchase, until Terralume had a 20% off deal, so that sealed the deal. Delivery was very prompt, & I have since fitted them & tried them out.

The lights appear to be very robust, with good mounting brackets, and an easy to fit wiring harness. Light output is more than ample, with good spread & plenty of distance. Large road signs will no doubt cause a lot of reflective light, but that is usually easily managed.

No doubt there are many situations, as RMD alluded to, that don’t require the output of these lights, where normal high beam or a small, 20” light bar would suffice.

If you wanted something smaller, Google “Peak Explorers”. A small LED light with good output but at twice price of the above 2 examples.
