I'm looking to purchase a portable jump starter unit.
Big enough to start a diesel Landcruiser.
Any information on the best ( or worst) would be appreciated.

Do you have "house" batteries?
We can start from them, simply by closing a connecting solenoid which also allows charging them from the alternator.
Some years ago, we were on the road for 3 months with a dead crank battery. Buying one in the bush can be expensive for little choice and it was better to wait until we were home.

This does the job, I have tested it on my 79. Jumpstarting from your house batteries is a good option though

I got on from ARB a couple of years back, charged it up and it was called into action to start an old Camry a couple of weeks back. Simple to use and enough safety features to hopefully prevent anything going wrong. There’s quite a few around and they offer more safety features than a simple set of jumper leads

I've got a Rooboost 1500 which seems to do the job for the 3L D Max. You might want the 2000 model.

https://www.rooboost.com.au/collections/jump-starters

At one point the Rooboost people were about to send me a new one, when they figured out that I was simply trying to use a wrong outlet. Set me straight, and unit hasn't missed a beat.

I have the Itechworld JS80 3000. It's a beast and supposedly will start most anything !! I have a LC200 4.5 TT diesel and I am confident it will start that without an issue. Have only jump started the wife's 2.4l Hyundai about 5 times so yet to really use it in anger!!!

I have one from itechworld. Well priced and I expect it to work if I ever need it.

This is the one I use. I have a 79 Toyota Landcruiser V8 diesel. I am in NE VIC & tested it on a cold winter morning with the starter battery disconnected. Started the car easily. I’ve got a video of it if anyone is interested. I got on special last year for $140 on Amazon

The Projecta IntelliStart from Repco is around $240. Expensive, yes, but was the only one I could find that advised it would start my (then) 5.6L V8 petrol. All the others simply imply it, or offer stats. For me that was the clincher.

From Projecta website... "PART NO IS1220

1200A PEAK AMPS, 400A CLAMP POWER

This powerful and compact lithium jump starter is capable of starting most petrol engines up to 7.0L* and diesel vehicles up to 4.5 litres."

While I can confirm it will start the battery off a jump start easily for the 5.6L petrol - the other good thing is that you can also elect to 'not' Jump start it and just allow it to charge your main battery.

It's also far better/ lighter/ smaller than jumper leads. One of the best things is if someone asks you for a jump start, you can just hand them this and then it recharges in your car. No need to get engines kissing each other or similar.

Says suitable for starting most diesels up to 4.5L, does specify under what conditions. It also doesn't specify how many Ah it is, these units are usually around 10Ah so they won't recharge your battery. The biggest Topdon unit is 3000A peak, 24 Ah and will start a 7Ltr diesel, it still wouldn't be able to charge a standard cranker which is usually around 100Ah on a large motor.

They also made a claim in their catalogue that it is the most reliable unit on the market, as soon as companies start making those sorts of claims I turn off.

Interestingly most of the top end units look pretty similar so are probably made in the same factory.

It offers more information than most. And yes, it will recharge your battery - having had this for a couple of years and needing it to do exactly that on my farm for a 5.6L petrol. I had mine nicked around a year ago and decided to buy the same as I have used it to start my Y62 Patrol, a LC200 diesel, my tractor and everything in between. MY jumps were only the Y62 and the tractor... but the others were friends or work-colleagues' vehicles.

Personally, I go by what someone would/ has re-bought than commentary. And I re-bought this one which hasn't let me down yet.

Are there better ones - I have absolutely no doubt. But this is a known for me. Not sure on the Topdon unit, but having access to 240V power to recharge the unit, we managed to charge the Patrol's battery back up to where it started the vehicle.

Same factory? possibly. Same design copied by others? Very likely. As I say though - it's one of the few that makes this claim and hence why I bought it. I am with you on the 'most reliable' garbage, however. I'd like to see how these things fail, in reality, if they're in any way made correctly.

Agree to disagree, a 10Ah jump starter can not recharge a 100Ah lead acid, it can put 10Ah in it buts that is all.

"Same design copied by others?"

Far as I'm aware Projecta don't make anything, from their website:

"Many Projecta products are designed and engineered by highly qualified personnel within the Projecta team and are manufactured to precise specifications by world class suppliers."

Most likley made / sourced from China who seem to make most of the jump starters anyway.

Yeah, sorry - didn't mean Projecta started the design, little doubt they didn't.

As for the 10Ah thing - well it worked.... and as I didn't make clear at all (reference the 240V), we had to charge it once more (so two charges) from a mains power outlet to transfer enough for it to work. Maybe that was all the battery needed, who knows.

But certainly not disagreeing with you regarding the 10Ah comment. I'd have to fight physics on that one, and the best that's ever gotten me is a stuck hand in the engine bay or under a seat with cuts to get it out.

Makes you wonder where the 1200 Peak amps comes from, perhaps if you pull it apart and short the battery terminals:)

I bought one from Repco for my boat, $200ish. I recharged it every three months or so. After 18 months the internals, presumably the battery, had swollen up expanding the case in a large bulge. Repco were reluctant to refund as warranty had expired. I reminded them of Australian Consumer Law and as it simply was not fit for purpose, I eventually was refunded. Scary to think this thing could have destroyed my boat.

What did the instructions say regarding charging, you shouldn't need to charge it every 3 months but even then it shouldn't swell up unless severely overcharged.

Howdy Frank

Yes - I do have a ten year old PX1 Ranger, 2.5 years out of the original battery - 2.5 years out of the following replacement SSB battery and now the current Bosch battery I put in is still going strong after 5 years !

Depending on use you'd think you should get at least 4 years out of a modern battery.
I personally think a lot of the Ranger battery problems stem from the car being locked all the time.
I went overseas for three months and left my Ranger in the carport unlocked and when I got home it started perfectly.

I will probably need to start shopping for a new battery this week after posting this and jinxing myself lol

Cheers

Funny you say that Gazz.

My Troopies battery won't flatten while the immobiliser is 'on', but leave it off and a flat battery is the result.

Only reason we started to get a flat battery was that (a) it was the original and amazingly 8 years old and (b) I was too lazy to go and get it replaced ( until it was giving me the @#$%s jump starting the car more often !!

G'day Gazz,

I got a year and a half or so out of the OEM battery, same with an SSB replacement, now 3 plus out of a Supercharge Allrounder. Strange things happen to the BT when a battery has declined so that it needs a jump-start. Car starts ok, but goes into limp mode, or if not that some mode where transmission shift patterns are all stuffed up. A fresh battery instantly fixes it, so I guess it has something to do with extra low voltage when the battery dies under cranking.

The BT50 doesn't have the so-called "smart charge" system that the PX1 has, but it still has weird logic where parking lights are automatically on if a door is not fully closed - easy to miss in broad daylight - and some other electrical quirks. And contrary to what you posted, I was told by my dealer that the car is not fully dead until all the doors are closed and it is locked with the fob. So that's what I do. Maybe it's the cause of my poor battery life, LOL - though 3 plus years out of the Allrounder is not too bad. However I know it's on the way out, it doesn't like being parked for a week.

Those of you carrying 18V tools and batteries.. dont overlook these batteries as an emergency charging source.. a very non ideal charging voltage, but dont discount it if you're in the middle of nowhere and desperately need to get going.

I carry 3-4 5Ah batteries for a recip saw, blower, portable fan, torch and a rattle gun.

I've always been a bit dubious about the claims of all these Lithium-based "glovebox" jump starters. Example: Altronics M8195B

2500A, but where? Short-circuit at the raw battery terminals? The connector pins for the plug-in jumper leads aren't going to handle that sort of current with indifference, and those are a better-than-many set.

Call me cynical if you wish. I like the BOLTED stud-connected leads on my trusty SLA unit, and as an EE it's the main reason i haven't gone with the small/light lithium trend.

Nobody has mentioned the batteryless ultra-capacitor jump starters. One of the guys on a trip last year had one. They can be charged up on a flat battery as they only need 5 volts to charge up. I don't know what brands are reputable. Apparently they are used on mine sites where flammable gases may be present as they are sparkless.
Incidently using your under bonnet second battery via the isolator can be an issue if your cranking battery is completely dead as the cables may be too light. A mate had to use his jumpers (3L Prado) so don't leave them at home.

Only needed a jump start once. Like Peter n Margaret I can flick a switch to parallel our 'house' batteries with the crank battery. Worked like a charm until I was able to replace the crank battery. Also allows all batteries to be charged from the same mains or solar chargers, & provides extra capacity for winching if required.
