I've an Immarset phone that I take on my trips.
Been a while since I've been away and the last few times I had plans that needed activation for the 30 days and cost roughly $100.
Each trip was good so the phone wasn't needed and the credit expired.
I understand it's insurance but wondered if there were any plans that cost a sign up but only charged for used calls?

Pivotel have a $43/month by month plan for Inmarsat phone - calls charged as they are made

Or if you want to save more money in long term they also have a $16.50/month by month plan - no calls included ($35 registration fee if you choose to start and stop subscription when not needed) - requires purchase of Thuraya sat phone, phone calls cheaper than Inmarsat.
