I have been tracked for the last 8 weeks or so until returning from the cape when it has followed a straight line, I see other similar issues on the
forum and people are talking about utrackme, I am sure I don’t have this but tracking has worked for me for 8 weeks prior, am I missing something here? I have an iPad Air cellular, latest model with its own SIM card.

You’ve lost me.
What App are you using? what is tracking you? Never heard of utrackme.
You may need to explain in more detail.

Only hazarding a guess but do you have a satellite tracker, if not then other tracking systems will probably only work when your cell phone has coverage so you get a straight line between where you lost coverage and where you obtained coverage again.
I suppose the Explore oz app could record the gps coordinates assuming you have a gps connected and upload them when you have cell coverage but not using the app for such I don't know. I would
hazard a guess and suggest you need a service like Garmin or Spot for accurate tracking when not in a cell phone area.

my travels, and has done so since may, however coming from
Weipa to
Cooktown it just done a straight line. I searched the EOforum and someone with the same issue said he was using iPhone Utrackme app, Michelle from EOz replied and said he may have the wrong settings in EOtrackme, I have not heard of this app, but am keen to
check my settings, if you search for straight line on the
forum it is the second or third entry with the follow up from EOz. I’m lost also.

Colin, we need to set a baseline so we can help you out. Your posts do not tell us what app you're using.
Are you using either
ExplorOz Traveller or
ExplorOz Tracker?
Or, are you using another app not made by ExplorOz?
For info, The ExplorOz TrackMe app is discontinued and no longer supported, so don't go chasing that.
Cheers

Colin
Are you looking at the server tracking in the App or via something
else?
Can you go into export positions , left hand menu in
ExplorOz Traveller, type in some dates and see if your tracking is there.

If you lose satellite connection then regain it, most tracking apps will draw a straight line between the point where you lost connection and the point where you regained it. I don't think it matters what the app is from my experience. It's happened to me using Oziexplorer and Memory Map.

You are correct in what you say, but depending on his setup in may be a server problem. This is why I have suggested he
check through export positions in the app.

You could also look at the snail trail which is a separate local device logged track to see if it has the same issue. I had some issues a month or so ago in SA under very heavy cloud cover when my device was unable to connect to satellites for some time (15 minutes or so). If you've been an EO Traveller user for a while you'll probably know that your position is logged on your device and if you move out of mobile coverage it will upload your track to the server when you are back in mobile coverage. Another issue that can arise when moving in and out of mobile service coverage is the app will freeze swapping between on and offline maps. The easy solution is to set the maps to offline maps, since the advent of downloadable offline vector maps, the resolution is identical so you loose nothing.

Hello, my understanding is that rain snow or clouds have no significant impact on GPS signal integrity. If your device was taking longer than normal to get a fix it would be for some other reason. The fact it was cloudy at the time was just a coincidence.

Generally clouds shouldn't affect a GPS but they can weaken the signal and depending where the antenna is can weaken the signal enough to prevent it working. The GPS antenna for my car navigation system is mounted up under the dash, in heavily treed areas the GPS signal can drop out so in my case trees can also affect the signal.

As I said - based on what I've read clouds have no significant impact o GPS signal strength - any loss of signal (real or perceived) will be a consequence of something else.

Some phones and tablets have very ordinary gps reception. I had an iphone version one that was terrible yet my ipad version one was fine. My latest android tablet from Lenovo is actually terrible as
well. I took the first one of my latest tablet back to the
shop saying the gps was faulty, but the replacement is just as bad so it must be the model. It loses signal after only a few blocks so a piece of junk gps wise. It's a Lenovo Yoga Tab 11 if anyone is interested in steering clear of it.

My experience with tracking applications like EO Traveller on Android is that at the default settings, if the app isn't the foreground app, then battery saving settings can interfere with logging, and I get the straight line effect that Colin describes. Certain app permissions may also be involved. The straight line is from the last place the app was in the foreground to the next.
You have to make sure than the app can run all the time without any interference from the OS to get . I have no idea whether this is also the case on iOS.

I found with early iPads, tracking on Hema 4WD maps, that I had to turn Auto-Lock to OFF, reduce screen brightness & switch on flight mode. Doing this helped the battery last “most” of the driving day, even with assistance from a USB charging lead.
Later, found that the then rare 2.4A USB outlets really made the device sit up & take notice! Of course, operator error often saw straight lines added when someone forgot to
check if tracking was enabled!
The Vhedia head unit with Traveller I’m using now doesn’t have the former issues mentioned above, but still suffers occasionally from operator error. :-)
