Hi all

Just wondering if anyone has installed an isolation switch in the 78 series? I know I can put something in line with the main battery under the bonnet, which I may do as a supplementary, but curious to know if anyone has bothered to trace out the loom and brake it with a switch under the dash.
Living in Darwin is becoming problematic, the police are now saying if you own a Hilux or Landcruiser to physically remove your battery every night if you park on the street.................
Basically living here is now like living in a community, property theft, violent crime are just a day to day event now.

Cheers

Lyndon

It can be done on the earlier 1HZ motors by putting a switch in the line to the stop solenoid on the injection pump, if it isn't powered on then the engine won't run.
BUT I think from memory the later 1hz's had an immobilizer attached to the injection pump which basically did the same but it made accessing the wiring to the stop solenoid very difficult.
Best to speak to an auto leckie if that's the case.

Hi Lyndon,

It can be done, not sure how easy though. A mate of mine has an MY17 79 Series and had one installed by an Auto. Elec.

It’s not just Darwin Lyndon, but the whole Territory.

When we were recently in Adelaide River for 5 days, the cockroaches come out at night.

In 4 nights, right in the caravan park, 2 vehicles were either attempted theft and 2 actually stolen. The 2 attempted were disturbed by the owned, and said they were all only young kids. The Police are that overworked in Adelaide River, it took 3 days to come and interview one of the attempted victims, which I think is BS.

The worst part, they were breaking into the owners vans while they were sleeping, stealing wallets and keys.

Then one late afternoon while I was washing my car, a young boy of no more that 10 was having a look at a 200 series, he notice Fiona was looking at his strange behaviour and bolted like a racehorse.

No different to several NW towns and area's in Western Australia. Totally out of control with no real support to the front line (police) by weak kneed politicians and do Gooders let alone the pathetic judiciary system. But hey, it's very important to put emphasis on apologies and name changes to towns and points of interest. That will improve the situation, not.
And don't get me started on the flag or should I say flag's situation !

Unfortunately we are the once that are discriminated against…..

When we were in Kununurra around 6 weeks ago, we were in a shop when a local man had a sports top over his shoulder and just walked out the store, the cashier did not say a thing and the security guard was the same.

What is the bet, that if it was me, I would have been detained and police called.

I mentioned it to another person in the shop and she said that if the police were called, there would be reprisals from his family members and most likely trash the store, so they regarded it as just part of business.

Same as when we were on our way up and in Alice I was speaking to a couple of local Police.

He said they were having mega problems with young kids 9 and 10 smashing car windows in the street,

When they get caught, nothing happens and they are fighting a never ending battles.

There was going to be an AFL match in Alice and the local police and elders had a round table meeting…..if the crime did not stop, they were going to cancel the footy match, but we left before it was scheduled to be played, so don’t know the outcome.

I would like to post my thoughts on Indigenous crime in this country after travelling this big brown land for fifty years - ten of which running an Outback 4wd and motor cycle tour company and how it effected my paying guests (most from overseas) and myself but I won't - for two reasons !

1) I will be labelled a racist !

2) I have a special number birthday coming up in a couple years and should I start telling the good folk on here about ALL the trouble I've had over the years I would probably miss my own birthday celebration lol

Happy safe and hopefully crime free travels

Cheers
Gazz
Ps - I have met some wonderful and fabulous indigenous people on my travels who would give you the shirt off their back on a freezing night and then give you their last bit of food if you were hungry but sadly these " REAL " first Australians are now becoming few and far between !

Interestingly, I googled Landcruiser isolating switches last night and the first thing to come up was videos and descriptions on how to bypass them! I was looking for the same reason as you Lyndon as it is getting out of control. There was one system that requires your phone to be with you to start, hopefully the little darlings haven’t stolen that as well, but without your phone, you need to use a sequence of buttons and/or switches before the car will start. For example, lock/unlock doors, then headlights, then radio etc, utilising normal devices already in the car. I thought it was quite clever really but I have a HZJ which is very basic and would be very simple to bypass any isolation system. A friend of mine has Airtag’s which he bought for his luggage but they would be great for tracking your stolen car. Not going to help with all the damage done to it but maybe the perpetrators are caught before too much damage is done and maybe you can get what’s in the vehicle back. Tony

Hi Lyndon, drop in to see your local auto electrician. Maybe a good alarm system may help, not many fitted anymore due to the manufacturers ignition immobiliser security system. That will warn you of a break in at night. Also an isolation switch is a good idea as you mentioned, its very simple to make, its made up of a few components. It will unlatch each time you turn off the ignition and just push a well hidden momentary switch and that will re latch a relay before you start your vehicle. Auto Electrician can make one up for under $10.00 worth of parts plus fitting. Michael

Hi Michael

Yep, that's sort of what I'm leaning towards. Whatever I put in needs to be basic, I can't have it crap itself out bush.

Cheers

I assume you are talking about making the car unstartable if the thief was in posession of the keys.
Then yes very easy to wire in, much harder to hide said switch.
I have in the past set vehicles up so they wont start unless the ciggy lighter is pushed in, for smokers I would get a second hand switch like a demister switch and put it on a switch blank, hide it right in front of them. If the car dont start they will bolt, not sit there switching every switch on the dash.
Another option is to make up a small circuit so you just have to touch a metal screw head somewhere on the dash while you turn the key.

A friend had that arrangement on one of his cars pre proper immobilisers. Concealed wiring under the bonnet and dash. Very effective.

Not worried about them getting the keys, they won't get those as the lovely young guy who broke into our house found out last year. If I'm not driving the car they live in the safe. I guess they could be stolen by low life at camp spots. Thinking Litchfield etc and back packers here. They wait for you to jump in for a swim, grab your gear and bolt. Not sure if most would be game enough to actually take the vehicle though as they would realise that would be going beyond petty theft.

Cheers

How about a "push on, push off" pressure switch activated by (say) your left knee and located beneath the carpet on the transmission tunnel? Nobody but you would know it's there.

A friend with an older RangeRover had a novel approach. Rather than going to the trouble and expense of installing an alarm, he just installed a small, red, flashing light on the dash that was wired to start flashing when the ignition was off. Looks exactly like an alarm or immobiliser warning light. He regarded it as effective when a workshop called to say that they couldn't start working on the car until they knew how to disable the alarm!

Briste, my Aurion came standard with that "flashing red light". I have never been sure if it does anything else, like arming an alarm?
The Sprinter on the other hand came with a fancy PIR system that detects any movement within the cabin. I had to disable it as when we are 'locked within' at night we could not move without triggering it!
But it still has the 'flashing red light', whatever value that may be.
Cheers

Cut the fuel line in a position that's not easy to see, but not difficult to reach from underneath.
Install a simple on-off ball valve tap of the appropriate dimensions into the fuel line.
When you leave the vehicle, reach underneath and turn the tap off. Cars don't go far when the fuel supply is shut off.

And when the vehicle starts and drives a few metres, then stops, the thieves panic when they can't get it to go again, so they bolt.
You could even install a small hinged flap of some kind to hide the tap from thieves eyes, if they actually think to look for a tap.
But most thieves won't spend more than 15-20 seconds trying to get a vehicle to go if it won't.

The area of most concern is the enormous amount of destruction that is done by thieves driving stolen 4WD's, carrying out ram raids.
One thief carried out a ram raid at Geraldton Airport and did at least $150,000 damage - excluding the vehicle damage.
This is what we're all paying for in our massive insurance premiums.

Cheers, Ron.

There are so many things you can do, resident hungry cattle dog would be 1. chain through steering wheel and under clutch another. The vdj does have a fuel pump valve electronically controlled, i wouldnt put a switch in between, but the ecu that controls it has power and accessories, switch on accessories wire would work.
