Ok Guys, time for a newbie type question.

I am going Barra fishing in Weipa FNQ in April 2005.

To do this I need to leave Adelaide in March and would like to drive up the route with the following o/night stops:

Adelaide, Maree, Mungerannie roadhouse, Birdsvill, Birdsville, Boulia, Winton, Hughenden, Townsville, Cairns.

My question is: I am planning to leave on 14 March '05, is this too early for the Birdsville track? Will there be hassles with the roads/tracks further up in SE Qld at that time?

Obviously I will be monitoring the weather and road conditions just before leaving. I have an alternate route planned going thru Broken Hill, Bourke, Moree, Miles, Rockhampton, Mackay. Townsville, Cairns

Looking for general advice to aid trip planning. Will most likely be towing a CT.

Ruth, Can I have a booking for two nights 16-17 March 2005???????????

Thanks guys

Muddy.

Hey Muddy

Sounds like you will be in for a great trip. Will be pretty warm around Birdsville at that time - going by how hot it was for us in April - high 30's or low 40's. I reckon at that time you still should be able to get a spot at Birdsville given that you have booked ahead and Ruth only has about 30 acres. Wouldn't it be great if they had a big flow down the Diamantina again....
I wanna catcha Barra too oneday!

Hi Voxson,

It is a 7 week trip and I'm in no hurry. If am planning on only 3-4 hours driving most days so that there is plenty of time to see the sights along the way. Many days only have 200km or so between o/night stops.

The return trip will be west from townsville out to Tennant Creek and then down to Adelaide over 12 days. Again only 200-300 km per day with a couple of 500km days once I hit Marla.

Once I get to Cairns I will be joining up with 2 or 3 other vehicles for the trip in to Weipa including possibly a local from Weipa. I have done that road before so have an idea of what to expect there.

Cheers
Muddy

Muddy, March is a great time to drive up the BV Track (generally). Every year we go to WOMADelaide which is usually around the first week of March and then return to Birdsville. No traffic that time of year - it's beautiful. Keep an eye out for us - the purple landcruiser, and have a great trip.

Yep, I'm waiting for the call any moment, then I'm heading straight down to Adelaide. I wonder what the record is for Birdsville-Adelaide?
As before, look out for the purple landcruiser, I won't be slowing down!
So an apology in advance for anybody that cops any flying gibbers......

When's Easter next year? If WOMAD's before Easter (which it usually is), then we'll be back. Don't forget we're always contactable in Birdsville on UHF Channel 20 (for bookings, greetings & Takeaway orders).

Look forward to catching up anyway. Cheers

Karsten

We are thinking starting of in Melbourne doing the Birdsville track from south to north, then to Longreach, then onto Brisbane just after Easter next year. Nodates have beens et yet and we are very flexible for dates.

Anyone interested in accompanying us on the Birdsville track or any other sections of the trip.

We will be in our Troopy pop-top camper and are looking at maybe a 2 week trip one way (going home after nomading for 18 months).
