Hi Guys,
On a recent rip to The
Dampier Peninsular, I experienced an issue with my Hema HX-1 where it “slowed” down and was reporting my position at least 2 kilometres behind the actual, and also “froze”. This occurred on several occasions, and seemed to be only happening when it was connected to the charger. I also noticed it was getting quite hot when connected to the charger. I know this was an issue early on in the life of the HX-1’s, but I was under the impression this had been resolved with a software update. My unit has had the latest update installed.
Can anyone tell me from experience if the latest HX-2 unit suffers from the same issue?
I managed to configure my iPad with the Hema App using an external GPS unit so I could see where I was and plan overnight stops etc. but was contemplating buying a HX-2.
I have also been “playing” with the Traveller App, and am still learning how to use it.
Macca.

Hi Macca
I really like the HX2, never any overheating issues, and in the last 11 weeks, we have been in some very hot areas, too hot for our likings.
More detailed maps in both sections and even in the off road mode, still shows you street names.
Lots of features you can toggle on an off and only yesterday when playing with it’s learnt how to have either map up or north up. And if you have been sitting still for an hour, it continues immediately, not like we hear with the GPS movement that some people are having with the new traveller app.
Would I but it again, sure would, works brilliant out of the box.
You will find them in many
places more than $100 cheaper rather than buying direct from Hema.

Hi Nick,
Thanks for your response. No, nothing to do with high ambient temperatures or position in the vehicle. The first time the problem occurred on this trip was at approx 09:30 in the morning at Horsham in Victoria on the first day. Ambient temperature was about 13 degrees, and unit located on a mount in front of the radio, not on top of the dash in front of the windscreen. It occurred again on the second day, twice, again ambient temperatures around the mid teens, and cloudy, so not in direct sunlight. After this, I put it away, so it was not used in high ambient temperatures.

Might be worth contacting Hema. I bought our HX1 in May 2017. Late 2018 (out of warranty) the screen failed (Coincidentally during a 7 month wet season stay on the
Dampier Peninsula). Hema replaced it, sending me the replacement to
Broome plus a return envelope for the old one. No cost to me. In October 2021 the screen separated from the body after sitting on our ute's windscreen when parked in hot sun on
Cape York. (Another wet season stint, this time at
Moreton Telegraph Station). To my surprise Hema said 'send it to us & we'll
check it out. Basically they completely refurbished it & updated it - & what I received back from them was essentially a completely new unit. (In fact it may have been a new one). All for $99 plus the postage (not much) to send it back to them. Not bad for a HX1 bought in 2017 with a 12 month warranty! I do think that the 12 month warranty is far too short for something which costs what the HX1 does, but I certainly can't complain about their after sales support.
This was the offer in Nov 2021 .
"I have assessed your unit and the manager has approved the follow two options for you.
Option1: We can service the unit for $99. This will include the replacement of the battery, screen assembly, main circuit board and the rear case. we will also update the software to the latest version. If you would like the latest Drive maps, they will cost and additional $65 .
Option2: We can upgrade you to the HX-2 by trading in your HX-1, this will give you a 30% discount $749 down to $499.

You couldn't complain about such great service. Pity other companies are not so accommodating.
Exploroz is another company with super service ........ you only have to ask.
Cheers

Hi Cuppa,
Thanks for your response.
Well that sounds like great service. I bought the HX-1 back in early 2017, so we’ll out of warranty. I had not thought about contacting HEMA, owing to the unit being so far out of warranty. Might be worth a try I suppose.
