I dug my cooking gear out of the shed today and found my BBQ plate has now got some surface rust on it.
It's a good quality steel one that was shiny and smooth when I last saw it.
The rust is bad enough to have scarred the surface of the steel a little.
What's the best way to get rid of the rust and make it good to
cook on again?
Thanks for any good advice.

Depends how fussy you are, I guess.
At a National Park fireplace/BBQ that is all rust we don't do so much of what follows. Just heat it up, scrub with oil and newspaper, a water rinse so it sizzles dry, oil and
cook.
For my own plate maybe an angle grinder and a flap disk to get rid of embedded rust, then wash and re-season as you would a new plate.
If the rust is just surface rust, not embedded scale, maybe a wire brush (not necessarily powered), wash, heat it and scrub with cooking oil and newspaper until there is no stain on the paper. Then wash again and re-season.
