I found the online 2021 maps very inaccurate several times so much so I have lost confidence in them. Are the 2023 maps the same as 2021 maps. Justifying their cost?

Suggest you give a couple examples of the very inaccurate map sections you are talking about.

The 2023 maps are brilliant, as the 2021 maps are. I’m with Ivan T T, Dusta and Bigfish how are they inaccurate?

Nothing wrong at all with Hema Maps, and I do not work for Hema.

My Hema HX1 has failed after only 2 years. Bought it in 2017, by 2019 it overheats when charging, slows down after about 2 hours, and eventually “freezes”.

I still use and recommend Hema paper maps though, I think they are probably one of the best paper maps around.

Macca a lot of the HX1 have had the overheating problem including my own but was overcomed with an update and works fine for me now . As you say It's great to have paper maps where you can lay them out on your bonnet or a table and everyone can stand around having a good look and they don't have glitches in the systems .

Macca

Do you check for software updates?

The overheating was an issue years ago that effected some units, not all and after complaints, Hema did a software update that fixed that issue.

The HX 1 was replaced by the new HX 2 in August 2021 and is very different and more detailed mapping.

Stephen & Nick,

The unit first started to heat up and slow down on our first trip with it in 2017. Did the Upgrade in early 2018. In late 2019 it started to do the same thing again.

Took it away with me again last year. Left Melbourne, and by the time I got to Horsham, it was already approx 500 m behind the actual. Rebooted, and same again after about 2 hours.

Tried it again the next day, within 3 hours it had frozen.

Wish I had hung on to my HS7.

Now using Exploroz Traveller on an iPad with an external Bad Elf GPS.

Macca : sure sounds like you've got a lemon Did you ask Hema if they would replace it with a new one at the time..
I recently had a issue with my Lowrance fish finder and they gave me a brand new one no questions asked .

Hi Macca

I use both my old HN7 and the new HX2

Love the concept of the HN7 to be able to add your own maps. After 8 years of faultless performance, the battery died late last year. Good old Google and YouTube. Thanks to YouTube showed you how dead easy it was to replace the battery, then ordered a new one from EBay and now just like new.

You may ask why would I still run both?

Last year when doing the full Binns Track, I added Westprint’s digital map for the track, which was highlighted and then the HX2 for general seeing where we were, which higher details.

People still bag out Hema Maps, but the new HX2 with its completely revised maps had many points of interested listed, that still are not on the new EO 2023 Maps.

Cheers

No I did not contact Hema directly, however I did speak with ARB last year as I bought the unit from them. Their advice was basically if it is out of warranty, they doubt Hema would do anything about it. They showed me two units with the same issue as mine that two of their own staff have had that Hema said out of warranty, sorry. Covid restrictions meant that we did not go away for two years, so did not use it, taking it out of the warranty period.

I have been contemplating just purchasing a new HX2, but have been a bit “gun shy” having experienced the issues with the HX1. How long have you had your HX2 Stephen? How has it performed in the time you have had it? What is its battery life like, how long does it last before it needs to be plugged in to a power source? Where have you got it located in your vehicle?

Hi Macca.

I have had the new HX2 now for nearly 18 months. I have it mounted in the middle of the front windscreen, so it’s easy to read for both driver and passenger and has never had any issues with heat.

Battery life? …….well to be very honest I can not answer that one as I have it plugged in all the time. Just a note on this, the new unit now uses a USB C .

Unlike the old HX1, the street mapping is brilliant and has a very similar look to the off road screen, but more detail.

It is very easy to clear all the icons on the screen by the simple press of a button which is very handy, especially on the street mode.

The off road page is very detailed with zoom in levels perfect if you wanted to use it walking, similar to the new EOT.

If you do decide to buy one, you will not be disappointed, but look around for pricing. You can buy them for around $100 cheaper from many stores rather than direct from Hema. As I live in South Australia, I purchased it from our state motoring body, the RAA and then got extra discount for being a member.

All updates are done via your wifi settings, as per the same as the old HX1.

I just can't see how someone would spend that kind of money on a single-purpose device when they are tablets out there that are technology-wise better in every aspect, had millions of $ in RD spent on and then allow you to run any map or app you want, have a day of battery life and can serve as multi-purpose devices if required. While I never used one, I have heard so much more Negative about the Hema devices than positive, so there got to be some truth to it.

Thanks Stephen,

I might have a look at a couple of on line sites and see what price they are asking.

Hi Stefan,

Each to his own I guess. I don’t always have my IPad with me, depending on where I am travelling to. Plus the mounts that are the most stable that the IPad fits into are not cheap. The IPad would also cover part of the dash that has controls on it that I would like to have access to.

yes each to his own, however if it does not work does not seem to best choice mind you, hindsight is easy.
I would consider giving the Garmin Overlander a go that seems to be the best of the dedicated Navigation units.
I have an older iPad Mini permanently in the car, and you can get a reasonable Android quite cheap with a Seasucker holder still around the same price of a Hema.

We've been travelling from SA to the NT then WA via the GCR, back to the NT via the Gary Hwy and now in East Arnhem Land. There's a lot of outback tracks in that to say the least

We have found both the 2021 and 2023 maps extremely accurate, a few small gaps here and there but nothing as bad as other maps.

We tend to use the EO system for the last 5-10km as it gives us all the detail on tracks and sites we need when approaching a POI or campsite etc.

All maps have pros and cons. There are areas where EOT is quite inaccurate and other areas where they are great same with Hema. I run MemoryMaps with Hema Map Pack as well as 25k Topo Maps as my main Navigation App and use EOT to check if in doubt. EOT has a lot of old tracks many of them not in existence anymore I still rather have old stuff not there anymore then the other way around. I always regard EOT tracks of the beaten track as questionable but great for exploration.

If you have 2021 maps don't expect much difference in regards to accuracy in 2023 maps it's more cosmetic and contour lines.

Any inaccuracies in the mapping that you find is up to us as users to let David and Michelle know so it can be corrected I have found them to be very proactive if you let them know if something is not right
I have noticed that people don't make comments or info on places on the places page so there is a real lack of information missing unlike WikiCamps where people are uploading info regularly

I think you will find that there are not that many people using EOT and even fewer making changes compared to Wiki Camps. Just have a look at EOT engagement on FB, or here it's a graveyard.

I personally think EO should get out of the App business and just licence their maps to AussieExplorer, Memory Maps and the likes.

I just shareed my honest opinion on the app and its current state. Personally, I find the maps to be great, especially for my specific needs. However, I have to admit that the app itself has been quite disappointing overall. Despite being one of the oldest navigation apps out there, it still lacks basic user-friendly features and suffers from reliability issues.

In my opinion, it would be beneficial for the developers to shift their focus and allocate more resources towards enhancing the maps and points of interest (POI). By doing so, they could potentially tap into larger markets and gain more satisfied users. I would even be willing to pay a premium price, somewhere between $50 to $80, for access to high-quality maps integrated into my preferred navigation application.

Let me be clear, I think David, the developer behind the app, is a great person. However, I can understand how, as the sole developer working on a project like this for many years, it could become challenging to maintain a broader perspective, and I don't think they look much around what is going on outsider their world and what others do.

What David & Michelle have done with the App from its beginning to what it is now is an absolute credit them. Their willingness to listen and adapt, their after sales service is second to none. I find the App to be just brilliant.
