Hi Matthew , What is the weight of the “Traffic”? As long as it is heavier than the van, it should be OK. Does the van have Electric Brakes or override brakes? If it has electric brakes, you will need a brake controller, if it has override brakes, you won’t.

Hi Matthew.
There are two elements to this, safety and legality.
Macca addressed the safety issue, however there is not a lot of info there to ascertain the legal side.
You need to
check the ball weight and GVM as
well. The 1950 kg, is that a weigh
bridge measurement or taken from the compliance plate on the drawbar? If the later you would need to
check on a weigh
bridge to get an accurate weight.
When you asked, would you risk it, you didn't say whether from a legal or safety perspective.
Safe travels,
Roy G.

Towing a van around at close on maximum weight is foolish as far as I am concerned. Your almost guaranteed it will be illegally overweight as the vans contents keep growing. . We all know that car manufacturers love to compete with each other with a chest beating 'OUR CARS TOWS MORE WEIGHT THAN YOURS"!! As has been said , what is the actual weight of the van fully loaded? You cannot believe a vans manufacturers word with regards to weights. Also are you sure that the legal towing weight of your vehicle is 2000kg. There are different models and from what I see non are 2000kg. 2 models are 2500kg. I might sound negative but everyday tourist season in
Cairns you see dozens of over weight, dangerous rigs driven around by so called adults who should know better.

Thank you all for your info.
On paper everything looks good and I have ebrakes.
I have decided to take my hilux 4x4 just to be on the safe side. It's a long way from
home if I have problems.
Better safe than sorry.

What model hilux?
The rules are the same for either.
I tow with a Hilux but only a camper registered to 1020kg, but plated for 1350kg. If it is too close I just have to pay double the rego and get a bigger number plate, strange how an extra 100 bucks a year makes it safer with no changes at all.
Have done for 10 years but over the years added bits and pieces to both so really don't know the actual weights anymore.
Booked in for a weighing and report next week.
Well worth the $300 for piece of mind.

Mat : it would be best to get your van weighed correctly at a weighbridge and the vehicle that you are going to use , you can then find a towing weight calculator on the internet . work out which vehicle would be best it might be that the Renault might be a better option.
It may be the case that you can put most of your load weight in the vehicle .
It is most important that you balance your load sensibly .
Personally I don't see the difference between what you're considering and some of the large four-wheel drives with massive great caravans they are towing as long as the weights are right.
Good luck .

Hi Qldcamper,
You pay "$300" for the weigh
bridge??? I only pay $40 at Forest Glen, and that includes weighing each axle separately.
Want the address?

Hi Allan,
Our local weighbridge is closed and time is a bit of an issue for me next break so although a bit more expensive it is more convienient to have a mobile service come to me.

.
My weigh
bridge only charges $40 for a scribbled note but more ($50?) for a certificate so that is handy but convenience does cost.

You did not mention any ball weight figures. That is more where you may strike grief. European vehicles are notorious for having low ball weight limits, they do not allow for a 10% ball weight for the van.
Is the ball weight of the trailer heavier than the maximum download limit of the Renault? If it is heavier, then it is a no-go.

NN highlighted something I found out late after I bought My Vitara, Unlike my previous Vitara, that had a towing weight of 1750kg, and a ball weight of 170kg, my newer vitara, had an 1850kg tow weight, but a reduced ball weight of 140kg, not that it matters now as I only tow, an older camper that has a weighbridge weight of 400kg, and max weight of 670kg, when we are towing, and max ball weight of 50kg. It is not a nice thing when you buy a car, and salesman lies to you about tow weights. I couldn't find anything on line until after I bought the car. I didn't get the log book till a month after I bought the car. The dealer said it was lost, conveniently found it a month later. Same a gain right now with my brand new bike different, dealer, has to order a log book as it didn't come in the crate with bike, me thinks they are hiding something from me about the bike, and if you knew what they put me thru over supplying me the bike over a 2 month period, you would also question it.

Hi All,
Thanks again for the info and advice. Short of going to the weigh
bridge, based on the calculations from the vehicle plates and specs without payload the Renault come up short on the calculations and the Toyota has the required capacity to tow safely.
Fortunately, I'm not carrying much load. Surf boards and clothes really. No passengers.
Happy towing all.
Matt

So,
check it out, the towing weight of the Renault Trafic is 2000kg and your van weighs in at 1950kg. You're looking at a road trip of 1400km. Honestly, I'd say go for it! As long as you're within the towing capacity, you're good to hit the road and enjoy the adventure with your caravan. Have a blast!

A few considerations, early renault had issues with 5th gear, google yours to see if its one of them, if it is tow in 4th.
are you travelling flat or windy hilly terrain?
weight distribution hitch will help immensly with sway, and keep things level,
Safe trip
