Allan, you beat my possible attempt to share it by 25 mins. :) Interesting article indeed with the history of it, etc. A top drive as well although haven't been on it for several years. Cheers.

Yes Stephen, interesting indeed. There are some people in our society who, when something needs doing, just get it done.

We were there with Friends of the Great Victoria Desert looking for Malley Fowl nests after some LiDAR radar scans.

Hi Peter,

Are you saying you can pick up Mallee Fowl nests with Lidar?
Cheers

Short answer is YES, but there is some 'learning' to do to interpret the results.
4 of us spent a week walking from the track to about 50 'possible' sites up to 1km (each way) through the scrub and across the dunes. NONE of those possible sites were actual nests, which was a bit disheartening, but subsequent efforts by others proved more successful as a result of what we learned.
This was typical of the false alarms. A mound of sand built up around a shrub.

We also reported on tracks we saw. One of our members can tell the difference between cats, foxes, & dingoes. Some are obvious.

Malley Fowl tracks.

And an empty Malley Fowl nest.

There are worse things to do than to spend a week walking through that country away from where the tourists venture. :)
There are also vegetation photo points all through there that another group was doing. We try to repeat the photos about once every 4 years, so will be back to Googs next year to repeat that.
Cheers,
Peter

Very interesting. Amazing tech. I bet you could find wells and old tracks also.
Sounded like a good trip.

LiDAR is certainly amasing tech. It can "see" right through the scrub and report quite extraordinary detail on the ground. They had flown down each side of Googs Track, recording possible nest sites as they went.
It was a very different trip, for us, but great to spend the time to see the country in close detail.
We are just back from another vegetation photography trip in Maralinga Tjarutja Lands including along the Anne Beadell in Mamungari Conservation Park. Beautiful country that!
Cheers,
Peter

Allan haven't had time to read the article yet, but will get around to it. (a fantastic drive BTW). Question what is the origin of the money tree and does it ever get cleaned out (by the family I presume)? When I was through there a few years back I was gob smacked by the amount of coins hammered into that old tree, which I'm sure will eventually die, if not already dead, of some metal based disease.

I don't know Duncan. I guessed that someone had a "bright idea" and it caught on to following imagination. But its actual purpose eludes me I'm afraid.

It's a great trip - and can be completed in an enjoyable loop adventure from Adelaide or Melbourne for those who want some enjoyable sand driving but haven't got the time to go north to the Simpson.

Just came back from doing the track a day or 2 after the celebrations, the track is getting a lot worse unfortunately and there is very little to no maintenance done.

Idiots have forced the authorities to totally block off the Lake, last time I was there a couple of years ago I camped right next to the Lake and it was fantastic but... you can now see where some bright sparks have taken vehicles onto the Lake and done damage that will probably take years to self repair

Oh and be careful what one says on the radio, I passed someone on the track after stopping to make sure they were OK only to get stuck further up the dune due to lack of speed & momentum, so kicked the sand out from the wheels and gently reversed down and took a run from the harder ground. Later I heard on the radio that "after those 2 went through it's all chopped up" well no, it was chopped up for us too, suprisingly it got better after we passed a couple of people towing - but towing doesn't harm the dunes ;-)

Nice drive, but the last 2 dune at the northern end are shocking on the Southern approaches
