1988 Troopy

Hey all,
I have been offered to buy an 1988 Troopy. It has a H2 engine with an aftermarket ARB turbo fitted. Mechanically it all looks and drives very
well, with bushes and
suspension components all recently replaced. It will need new injectors in the near future but that looks to be all that is mechanically required for the short term.
My main concern is rust. It has rust around the bottom of the windscreen as
well as the A pillars, and some rust along the roof channeling. The two front doors also have some rust but I am not too concerned about that. There are some small rust holes in the foot
well both passenger and driver side. I have been told I can take it for $10,000. Do you think this is a fair price? Emotion is getting in the way and I don't want to purchase something that will end up costing huge dollars when I could potentially wait around for a bit and buy a Troopy with less needing done to it for similar cash.
Any advice, thoughts and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Go out to the street, look up and down, take way of least resistance and RUN. Looks like a ex hire vehicle that I have seen on Frazer Island being thrashed by Backpackers. Good Luck.

this is sound advice other than the first "Go out to the street, look up and down" bit ... RUN from where you are that is a money trap

I wouldn't buy a rusty car , no matter what . Wouldn't pass a vehicle safety
test I'm thinking.

Good buy at 2 grand to run around a
farm. Otherwise I wouldn't touch it wait for something better.

I totally agree with Batts. maybe $2000. You will be for EVER chasing rust in those spots and early LC's had many rust problems. At $10,000, they are not offering it to you. It is simply for sale at a high price.
The 2H engine with a turbo MAYBE ok but I would be concerned, ie, worried, the turbo if used with more than a mild boost level will have cracked pistons AND/OR the inserts in the head where the precombustion chambers are. You can't look inside the cylinders to see. Best not to buy it and NEVER see inside the cylinders.
LOOK ELSEWHERE! Save your energy and simply walk away!

With that rust he would not get a roadworthy certificate so no sale is possible. Even if patched there would be more latent rust waiting to break through. Also, the H2 engines did not take kindly to after-market turbos.
Don't walk.....RUN away. It is worth parts only.

Wouldn't touch it - that's a 38 year old vehicle in very poor condition. Had much less rust than that in a vehicle I purchased when in London years ago, and it failed the MOT

Hi Wilcey,
Another vote for walk away from it. You will not get a roadworthy certificate with the rust in it. It will be an expensive job to get all the visible rust out of it, once they start cleaning the visible rust, there will be more that you cannot see. It will cost you more than what you are paying for it.

There were 99 Landcruisers under $15k on carsales this morning. I bet most of them would be a better buy than that rusted out POS.

Its full of rust, you will spend another 20k fixing it.....oh, its common to see rusted wheel arches covered by flares too....ex mines always have flares....

If you look at the windscreen next to the drivers wheel it looks like it is full of bog already, roof has a rust blister, passenger side A Pillar has a rust crack going straight across
You would not be seriously considering this - it belongs in a scrap pile
