GPS for old farts

Hi,

Can someone explain how we can get rid of the old Hema and use the Explore Oz on our iphone/ipad and use the new Kenwood carplay? Can this be done or are we dreamin!!

Any advice as we only use the Hemi when travelling eg. Great Central Road and like to know where we are and what's ahead.

Be gentle please - and talk slowly :-)

Just to be clear, EO wont run in the Apple iOS system and therefore, wont run on apple carplay. Most carplay head units can run either carplay (apple) or android auto (android OS) depending on which phone/tablet you use. It is a case of either one or the other but not both. David's tutorial is showing a work around for Apple users who can use the Android AI interface box to allow your apple device to 'be converted' to Android Auto which your head unit also supports. The key limitation is that only apps that are universal to both platforms will be available and even then, as in the case with EO, you will need to purchase the Android version of the app from the Android Play store (like the Apple App store).
It would be so much easier if there was an apple version of EO but I believe that there are contraints that apple imposes that make this difficult at the moment (if I'm correct).

EO runs perfectly on all my Apple devices. That's all I have ........ Apple . And no other add ons of any sort , the program just works perfectly on Apple.

Cheers

Hi Jim, thanks for correcting my post (Which I don't think I can correct). EO runs perfectly on apple iOS. It just wont run on apple carplay due to apple's rules (David explained it well when I enquired). People use the term carplay as a generic descriptor for head units that can support either Apple or Android and possibly confusing apple users who wonder why their EO isn't showing up on the head unit. Sorry for any confusion.

Just to clarify cranksters 1st reply,
Is that correct that an Apple user would need to buy an additional licence to use the Androids add-on for the app for there carplay head unit ? .
Why is it that you would need to buy another additional license when you can use your original license to download on multiple devices ?
I don't see the difference .

Hope that makes sense .

Hi Nick, hopefully someone who had done this can provide the answer as I have yet to take the plunge. We have just upgraded to a new Everest with wireless carplay/android auto head unit but use apple devices. I’ll be looking into the android AI type add on boxes shown in David’s tip video to use the app on the big screen in the new car. It is a shame that we can’t have EO in the apple carplay eco system but that seems to be the constraint. I’m assuming that because we are in essence running two systems, a second license for android will be required. Both would of course be linked to your account.

Nick, any device that runs on multiple operating systems have different software to match the appropriate operating system. The amount of time required to develop each of those programmes so they run correctly effectively makes each of the packages for the different packages a new application to do the same basic job.

If you want to use this new application on your different system, you have to pay for its development.

The same sort of thing happened when Camps Australia Wide produced POIs for the camps in their books, you had to purchase a different set of the basic information to suit your own brand of navigator. WikiCamps also has different apps for each operating system and you have to pay a new licence for each.
