Birdsville Inside Track Road - CLOSED indefinitely

Inside Track

The Inside Track was gazetted as a public road on 16th January 2002 and provides an alternative route that is also 35km shorter than the main Birdsville Track.

After inquiring about the Birdsville Inside Track two weeks ago I was told it would be open at some point early this year but in their latest update, the Diamantina Shire Council has now listed as CLOSED indefinitely.

Sort of resonates with my post 149829 from 2 days ago. We are slowly being shut out of everywhere.

On the South Australia, dpti.gov.au site it says it is open. Maybe it is a Queensland thing.

Diamantina Shire roads report 7/3/25
The report describes it as a 'SHIRE ROAD-LRRS' "Via Inside Track DSC"

Map

Some maps show two different "Inside Tracks" north of the border.
Can we be sure which the Council is referring to in its report?
I could believe that the 'main' Inside Track was a Main Roads responsibility, rather than a Shire responsibility.
I know. Clutching at straws. :)

Maybe crossing between the Inside Track and the main track via the E-W track via Pandie Pandie to avoid the Queensland section is an option? None of the maps I have suggest it is a private road.
Anyone driven this?

The road across to Pandie is not a gazetted road so I think you might have issues with the station. Just because it not listed as private doesn't mean it isn't

I've been trying to do the Walkers Crossing track (Moomba to Birdsville Track) for about 12 years, and it's always closed. As others have said, eventually they'll shut us out of everything :-(

We rolled into Innamincka Oct last year to be told it was open. After doing Walkers we were told the stations dont want it open. And they have had rain up there so dont expect it open this weekend.

They closed what?

There are 2 inside tracks on the Qld side for a small section by the lake, the west one is the original track and possibly the one the council is referring to. I am sure the Police know the details, given that the council's website is unclear.
