EO Traveller question

Not sure if I'm asking about impossible, or whether there is a simple solution I haven't found.

We have been using EO Traveller a lot more than in the past, since I installed the dash mounted ipad for my wife (navigator) to use. Having it there in front of her has really changed the way we travel. She loves being so much more aware of where we are, & I love that she loves it.

But one thing is bugging us.

Zoom in to see more detail, (tracks etc) but zoom out to get the bigger picture & so much detail disappears.

Is there any way of retaining some of that detail when zooming out?

Hi Cuppa,

Great question — and you're not alone in noticing this. It might seem odd at first when features appear or disappear as you zoom in or out, but it’s actually a deliberate and necessary part of how the EOTopo map works.

EOTopo is a custom-designed, high-resolution vector map built by us (I.T. Beyond Pty Ltd. ) using 260 unique datasets. This includes roads, tracks, terrain, water features, infrastructure, and much more — all layered and managed through a bespoke stylesheet that’s unlike anything used in other mapping products.

While many mainstream vector maps rely on standard stylesheets (often hiding minor 4WD tracks like the Canning Stock Route until you zoom right in), EOTopo has been carefully designed to reveal important off-road minor remote area detail like this much earlier — often from as low as Zoom Level 4, thanks to our unique Trek system and mapping rules.

To keep the map usable and clutter-free, we use a system of layer hierarchies that determine what’s shown at each zoom level. As you zoom in, more detail is revealed. From around Zoom Level 12 onwards, the full dataset is available — however, the exact display can vary slightly between devices due to automatic adjustments based on your screen size, resolution, and content density. This ensures optimal readability and prevents overlapping labels or symbols.

For example, a small phone might suppress some labels at a given zoom level to avoid clutter, whereas a tablet or larger screen can show more — even at the same zoom. You may also notice that urban and remote areas are styled differently, allowing finer infrastructure details (like paths and buildings) to display clearly in populated areas, while remote zones are kept clean and simple.

And remember — if you have the Places overlay turned off, key POIs like camps and caravan parks will still appear as base labels (built into the map file), but this data only updates when you install a new EOTopo edition. When you turn Places on, that layer dynamically syncs with the ExplorOz database for the most up-to-date content, so you can explore with the latest info live or offline.

So in short — it’s not a glitch, and it’s not just how “all vector maps” work. This is a purpose-built, Australian-designed system that dynamically delivers just the right amount of information for your context — whether you’re zoomed out to plan your route or right in close checking track conditions.

Hope that clears it up!
Michelle

PS: just check that you are using defaults initially - if you change to use oversize fonts/buttons etc this may cause unexpected results in the output that the stylesheet cannot adjust.

Looking forward to a time when we can open a second EOTraveller so we can zoom in with one and out with the other taking advantage of the iPads bigger screen like several native apple apps .

That would be an interesting way around the issue wicket.

D&M I do understand what you have said, and I guess often it is the better of two evils as it were.

An example of where found it was very irritating occurred in the past couple of days.
We were travelling from Edith Falls NT, the relatively short distance of 37kms to a free camp on the banks of the Fergusson River. Zoomed in we could see the entry to the tracks along the river, but were unable to see them if we were zoomed out enough to see our current location at Edith Falls. This on an iPad 10. No idea what the zoom levels were were using, just that it wasn’t possible to show the full journey because once the river tracks were no longer showing, my wife was unable to locate where we were going.

Yep we always use multiple screens - a phone zoomed in close for driver on windscreen mount, headunit showing a much broader picture. If i want to plan ahead, research etc I use an iPad on my lap.

Cuppa , what might help is , I set my zoom increments to the maximum of 2 , that way I can zoom in and out a lot quicker by using the zoom putton .

Also in your example above you could have set a quick route from your current location to the turnofftrack .
Cheers Nick

When I show EOT to others and recommend it, I note this as one of its limitations. My solution is to switch to the Memory Maps for All app with HEMA maps. I can usually find a map with the right level of detail. And therein likes the weakness of that combo - there are a lot of maps and you're often switching between them. Plus the fact that you can't zoom in to for really fine detail, which is one of EOT's strengths. I regard the two apps as complimentary rather than competitors, as nothing is perfect, not even paper maps.

You may want to experiment with the cluster separation setting, although I don't think that will change the behaviour that you're observing.

Essentially I guess this is what we do. I, as the driver have the Hema HX1 Navigator, which, depending upon location, can be short on detail (in areas where zooming in doesn't take you to a more detailed map). My wife has Exploroz on the dash mounted iPad. She can't see the Hema screen & I can't see the the Ipad screen, which results in the occasional 'interesting' conversations & frustration as we drive. She is less 'device savvy' than I am, so switching between apps is not really a solution which will work for her as we drive (the ipad also has the Hema 4WD app with the same maps as on the HX1).

The quick 'Route' which Nick suggested would have been helpful in my example of going from Edith Falls to Fergusson River, because Fergusson River is listed in 'Places' (which I hadn't considered), but unless I'm wrong a 'route' can only be to somewhere listed in 'Places'. I don't think I can select a map position or enter coordinates to get a 'Route' to take us somewhere ....can I?

A few responses. As Michelle said or implied, EOT is not alone in this sort of behaviour. App designers need to make decisions about how to keep the screen readable as you zoom in and out. The same is true for campsites and other points of interest. Most apps start to cluster as you zoom in and out (this is configurable to a limited extent in EOT). Which is my biggest gripe with the new version of Wikicamps - it doesn't cluster, and the alternative behaviour where sites disappear and randomly reappear is far worse and makes the app very hard to use. I am starting to experiment with the Camps Australia Wide app, which does cluster, but both of these are worse than EOT in terms of losing road markings as you zoom out.

Yes, Nick's solution is a useful workaround. You would need to construct the route when you had a data signal, in order for the app to access the routing service. That may lead you to discover another of EOT's limitations, which is that routing service, which often has a mind of its own, and will occasionally require you employ various devious workarounds to get the route you want. Best to leave that discussion until you need it. Again, EOT is not alone in having this "feature". Nothing is perfect.

I am very familiar with some degree of variation in the level of "device savviness" in members of the travelling party. I'm on Android, so I can't help. My wife has Apple and she can manage to swap apps, but I do understand. I have my Android tablet centrally mounted just above the vehicle's head unit, and I can manage to switch apps fairly readily and moderately safely (opinions vary on this last point LOL). I can get EOT and MMfA/HEMA both on the screen in a split screen arrangement, but I'm not sure that's all that helpful. I don't often need both on the screen at the same time - I either want the big picture or the fine detail. What I do find I need to do as I get close to a campsite is to switch to Wikicamps (or CAW) to get the precise location of the camp, as EOT doesn't have them all, and on occasion can be slightly misleading.

Just to be clear, I am a big fan of EOT and it's what I mostly use, except when one if its limitations causes me to switch apps.

Thanks Briste. I too am a fan of EOTtraveller, and accept that any mapping system needs compromises making it less than perfect.

I do like EOT’s level of detail, so won’t be giving it up any time soon.

A couple of points noted in this discussion surrounding navigation that may help:-
1. No you aren't restricted to ExplorOz Places for navigation - you can simply drop a marker (even if offline) to create a personal place and use that for navigation
2. If offline you can use the Ruler tool to tap out a route following the exact roads you want to travel and get distance calc, a line to follow but no prompts.
3. Offline you can also tap the marker (Place) you wish to head to and simply use straight line nav which gives you basic direction yet you’ll follow the road out your windscreen - easy and perfectly sufficient when remote
4. PLEASE if you happen to find any Places slightly not in right position MOVE IT or leave comment for admin to MOVE. Move is an online function and the button is found in the bottom corner of the mini map. If you want to move it yourself but are offline - use the NOTES function to remind yourself then move it when you have service.

When app users work collaboratively to fix minor issues like correcting things, the app improves for everyone LIVE !
