For those of you that read or contributed to the post here is the outcome in brief
I was blaming the Carlinkit device. (Wrongly as it turned out)
I tried my Android phone, same drop out disconnect issue with the OEM USB cable.
I tried 2 different USB cables on both devices...same disconnect issue.
So, I blamed my Landcruiser 300 series head unit. I gave up and didn't use it any more but we are travelling and I need my
Exploroz Traveller, its my bible and go to app, I had separation anxiety issues ??. I stepped back and thought it all through over a couple of days.
Then I tried another dedicated USB cable that stated clearly for Charge and DATA use. (I sourced it from a hard drive I had with me)
It worked perfectly!
So, in summary the OEM cable had a fault as it started to send data. The other 2 USB cables I tried had charge capability but limited data transfer.
The moral of this, I guess, is I was too quick to blame the Carlinkit, compounded by testing with 2 USB cable not fit for purpose.
Hopefully this experience might help others in a similar situation of any device that is having issues. Step back and have a sleep or 2 and a few cold ?? as
well!

I had a similar problem with an IPhone and Carlink 9 months ago with a new Toyota and not too old Iphone.
It was working, then changed the USB cable, as I was needing a shorter one.
Carplay stopped working. As it was all new to me, and not realising that the USB cable was critical to succesful operation, I did all sorts of things attempting to get it to function assuming that the phone or head unit were at fault.
After I plugged in the fifth cable I had around the place it all worked, and hasn't failed since.
Just as 'oils ain't oils', nor are USB cables.

There are some USB cables that are only for charging. They only have two internal wires, not four, Typically they come with devices that are not data-capable, e.g. torches, lights etc. I've just been through an exercise to identify some of the ones I have. Typically they're short, but not always.

I purchased a Carlinkit but am unable to load apps like Sygic, PowerAmp etc so am setting up an unused Samsung Galaxy A20 as a permanent Android Auto server that will live in the car.
I have just changed the rear USB outlets to be continually powered so the phone is always on rather than needing to wait for it to boot every time I get in the car.
I am trying to find an app that can manage the phone charging by shutting down the charging from the USB port to save cooking the battery so if anyone knows of one, please let me know.
