I drove Home Valley to Oombulgurri Community privately with 2 other vehicles in 2006 in the OKA (while the Community was still operating) and we also came into Oomari from the west that some year after spending a week exploring Carson Station the year before.

Some of the toughest driving and most spectacular country in Australia.

I understand that you can not drive this track except via a tag along now. I understand that there are a few people still at the Community.

This was 2007, not 2006. We were there to help with some University research on "non spoken language".

I took a ride with some locals to the next jump-up about 20km NW of the community. It had been washed out during the previous wet season and I figured it would take us about 3 days work before we could get up it. In addition, the petrol 80 series 'Cruiser was using lots of fuel and we doubted it could get through to Kalumburu without supplementary supplies, so we decided to charter a barge and go back to Wyndham by river.

Some expeditions you never forget.

Peter

Found another couple of short video clips.
The 18 month old 100 Series trying to cross the Durack River. Looks easy. I winched him through with the OKA. The large diameter tyres made a big difference, but it was still tough.
The 80 Series made it unassisted. He had diff locks front and rear.

The 100 series negotiating a section of a jump-up. The patient and gentle approach used no doubt limited the potential vehicle damage.

It certainly is a tough track Pete. I watched the All 4 Adventure guys do this track a couple of years ago as well.

Go to YouTube and see 4WD 24/7, All 4 Adventure and Top of Down Under. They have all done it and the continuation which is the Carson Tk in the last few years. Peter's pix show the size of the huge boulders quite well. Good luck.

Not in the past year or so but in August 2021. Colin, Ronny's dad led the trip as Ronny was unwell. Trip in the main is fun with some challenges. The Durack River is by far the biggest hurdle. Me in my leaf sprung 75 series Troopy with 31's got hung up nicely on a huge rock. Got winched off it and was ok after that. A rear diff locker at least will be of great help as the only vehicle in the convoy without traction aids suffered badly.
We all had some minor damage. I had the worst as all my rear axel hub bolts sheared and my axel spline decided to part company with the car.

Overall a fantastic trip, the scenery is stunning and the art sites are amazing. Apparently the fishing is excellent but our mob couldn't even catch a cold.

You will definitely enjoy yourself.

Not my video but an old work mate of mine from 40 odd years ago made the trip solo.

The Munja Track to Walcott Inlet is (was) a fantastic drive. We spent over 2 weeks in there in 2005.
Not in the same difficulty class as the Carson Track though.
It is now closed unfortunately, since Rick and Ann Jane gave up Bachsten Camp.

Peter

Thanks for that greybeard. Brought back some great memories of some stunning country.
I am surprised he did not visit the King George Falls.
That video was from a 2014 trip. There had been more traffic on the track than there had been in 2007.
There is also more buildings left at the Community than I thought. Reports were that most of the buildings had been bulldozed, but clearly that was not the case.
Cheers,
Peter
