I live in Adelaide and would like to know of any 4wd tracks that I can do which are only 1hr or less away from town. All roads that I know of around the Adelaide Hills are well maintained dirt roads (therefore boring!). I live in the Eastern Suburbs.
thanks,

G'day Gossy,
I think you'd be fairly hard pushed to find anything other than "boring" dirt roads that close to town. Deep Creek Conservation Park is about an hour from the city but again it's mainly dirt roads, not a bad place to camp tho. Robe would probably be your closest 4wding spot or perhaps look at the Yorke Pen.
I'd also love to find a spot that close so let's hope someone knows of one.
Good Luck sorry I can't be of much help.
Brad

thanks guys. Looks like I might have to travel a bit further. I know of the usual spots like Robe, Yorke etc. Will just have to accept that I just can't hop into the
car and go for a nice day drive!

Burra, Morgan, Southern Flinders.

Unfortunately not much really close to Adelaide thats available to the public.

Join a Club as their Public Liability Insurance and Training gets them onto Private Property and other areas closed to the public.

Also try the 4wd out of adelaide Yahoo Group. Over 300 members asking the same question and sharing the answers.

Gossy

I think if there was such a spot close to Adelaide then no-one would want to disclose it anyway!, otherwise it would get ridiculously over-used and idiots would ruin it for us all.

But I did stumble across a good spot the other day, not far from Adelaide CBD, in fact IN the Adelaide CBD. Only any good if its been raining lots like it has lately. Try the Northern end of the Adelaide Cricket Ground off Pennington Rd. Was negotiating the hill when back end started sliding out, nearly into another car! Slippery as anything.

P.S. True story but I wouldn't turn it into a 4wd track.

There's ashort track and creek croosing at Coles Crossing near Mt Compass. Prbably not worth a special visit but I drive it when I visit a mates property at Willunga Hill. There are a cople of hill climbs off the Old Sellicks Hill Rd, accessed through the car park of the Victory Hotel. Other than that it Robe, Ngarkat or Flinders, none of which are an hours drive away.

thanks to everyone who has replied. Fairly new to this site but used it for doing Googs Track and Robe beach run. The info everyone gives each other is great. It is true about the Vic's. I guess the closest thing they get to a tough track is the Border Track! It's a shame Adelaide wasn't established up near Pt Augusta so then so many more tracks would be accessible for just day trips! Anyway thanks for all your help. I am intrigued about the track near the Adelaide Oval so will have a look at that one!
Thanks,

If I remember correctly, the RAA maps for the Barossa Valley & Nth Adelaide Hills indicate some tracks from the west across the hills to connect to the roads on the Eastern side. I've never explored these but have often wondered if they would be worth a go. I seem to remember they are in the Marne R. area.
