Did you know that if you are in a blackout situation with your house that you can actually power your house from an invertor which would allow you to run a few lights, foxtel, tv etc in moderation depending on the power output of the invertor?..... And if you are reasonably prepared it can be as simple as a 2minute operation....
You can be the only person in the street watching cable with the lights on....

I had the brigg's and straton 6hp 3.5KVA gennie from work and home all winter, used it a few times, worked a treat, however I'm sure I am a little less popular with the neihbours now! LOL.

That's because most of your power comes from the Eastern states, and we know how down at heel you crow eaters are now that Mitshibishi has closed part of it's plant

I guess when the lights came back on it wasnt the same once you could see who it really was, compared to who you were thinking of in the dark ... ;-)

And dya also know that this is fraught with huge danger, you have to isolate your house from the street mains unless you want your inverter or cheap gennie to try and run the whole area and even then its dangerous.

You know theres never anything that easy

TAANSTAAFL is definitely something we can all live by hahaha

I agree. A good point.
When I use the Gennie, I do NOT use the house wiring, but extension cords from the gennie to the lights / TV

What about the earth?

I've seen recent reports of risk of injury with gennies and apparently even the use of earth leakage (between gennie and appliance) may not be effective.

I assume cheaper gennies may be riskier. The next up is a Honda though, which is probably more reliable but dear for occasional use?

I'd like to buy a small gennie for back up for camping trips but I'd liike to solve the operational safety issues first.

There is an instruction with mine (Scorpion) to earth it in some circumstances
with a cable & spike in ground!
Obviously care is required if using 240v output whether it be by gennie or
thru your inverter which may also need earthing if outside the vehicle.

I have standard operation for blackouts.
Light candle, fill bath, grab bourbon/wine/beer & relax.

Cheers

It's quite easy (and safe) to use the house wiring,........IF you turn the mains switch off- thereby isolating you from TRYING to light up the whole neighbourhood (obviously you won't suceed, LOL), and also avoiding frying your generator/inverter when power comes back on.

Trouble is, then you don't know when the power comes back on..............

Legally an automatic change over switch is required. This way it is impossible for the mains to connect to the temporary power source. I have seen a 700hp 28 ltr diesel generator fail with a huge bang after being incorrectly wired into a switchboard.

The safest way to run appliances in your home from a genset is via extension leads.
