I went to put insurance on my new van that I will be picking up on the 4th Sept and thought that as my current 1 is with AAMI that would be the go, alas the premium of $980!!!!!! was way above the amount I expected. AAMI says Canberra is a high risk area. APIA is offering the same coverage at about $460 including $1000 contents cover and this can be either agreed or market value. My credit union who will finance the deal are pushing Alliance.. but their policy, though competively priced is for " Market value less an amount for depreciation, wear & tear" i.e in the event of a total loss they say the van is worth whatever they think...
Van is worth $46500 so I will have to insure it comprehensivley and an agreed value policy is the way to go and some people have had bad encounters with CIL insurance. Anyone have any ideas or has anyone any horror stories about APIA who at this stage seem to want my busness the most...

Hi Rick,

You really need to read the fine print on caravan insurance. I have had my van insured with 3 different mobs (CIL, TCIS and SGIO) in 3 years. Luckily I have never had a claim, but I have found some traps to be aware of.

My van is a poptop with canvas ends and with one mob the canvas ends and pop top plastic where not covered after 3 years old! Another mob would not cover an annexe over 3 years old without significant depreaciation plus items like house batteries and chargers were not covered. One would only allow $500 total for contents (TV alone not fully covered, never mind all the sundries like bedding, clothes, crockery etc... in the event of a fire). Also, I do not like market value policies and would avoid one like the plague.

I have now ended up with SGIO (in WA) as I have found it to be the most cost effective cover (not the best cover, but best value for money). I also insure with SGIO for home and vehicle and after having had a home and vehicle claim, have actually found them fantastic to deal with when claiming!!!

Good luck in your quest.

Cheers

Captain

Hi Rick, Well we did have a claim, we were with CIL (still the cheapest and best), they were fantastic. Something went straight through the side of the van (possibly a 'feral' star picket) at Larrimah in NT. Arranged with CIL to have fixed at Townsville. They were fabulous. We are collecting our new van(second hand) in September, have rung, emailed so many companies re insurance. CIL & SGIO definately stand out cost wise. Some companies were almost double price and some others do not cover Australia Wide.

Good luck with your new Van,

regards, Bigbear

Stated in the past, do insurance recovery work for all above.

AAMI, APIA and Alliance are all under the Promina umbrella. In other words, Promina owns (Shareholders own) all of them. If you are in the age bracket APIA are very good from what I have heard.

Leave it to you mate, but make sure you shop around. Competition is a wonderful thing.

Cheers

Chris.

Rick

I have the van insured with NRMA. From memory it was about $300 to insure for $20k. Might be worth checking out.

I have APIA on my van, and am currently going through a claim after copping a flying rock above the front window.

They are excellent with their service, and I was surprised to find that AAMI does all the claim admin for them.

Both APIA and AAMI have been great with this incident.

regards

Dennis
