Hi Russell.
The rattle will be in the clutch. I presume it is a diesel.
Go to a caltex depot and buy some Textrans or in the Mobil it is 424 fluid. You can also buy it from Coventry Spare Parts or Ford. Put this in your gearbox and you should note a considerable improvement.
If replacing the clutch, do yourself a favour and install a genuine toyota one and not an after market one. I put in a Daiken clutch and had nothing but dramas with noise, later put in a Toyota one and bingo no dramas. I have 277 000 k's on mine now.

I have a '94 80 series with 253,00 on the clock doing the same thing, but when I double clutch I don't have a problem and if a give the stick a little nudge towards first before going into 2nd from 3rd I don't have a problem either. But it is now starting to catch a little when going from 4th to 3rd if I am doing more than about 50km/h. I have been told it's the syncros and will cost about $450 to repair, if I remove the box and reinstall it. I have only gone to one place so far so I don't know how good that costing is, but I can keep you updated as I find out.

Hope this helps.

Bear in mind there are two different gearbox's fitted to the Landcruiser.
The GXL runs a different box compared to the DX model. The DX model is alot cheaper to overhaul than the GXL as they have different styles of Synchros.

The 80series gearboxes are finicky with oil. Most popular solution is to use Castrol VMX-M 75/90. Seems to improve the shifting no end.

If that doesn't work, consider the other options.
