When I first joined VKS737, I had a hired radio and therfore was issued with a non-selcall callsign ie 3 digits (Quebec 880). When I bought my own radio I asked to be issued a selcall code. In the phone discussion, I was told my selcall code would be 8800. I was under the impression that codes ending in 00 were group call codes.
In any case, I have not been able get my radio to respond to a selcall. I note that the VKS737 site says some radios cannot use codes ending in zero. I have been assured
mine will work with a code ending in 00 but it doesn't seem to.
It is a Codan 8258b

David,
your SelCall number will not respond unless it has been programmed into your
HF radio
If you take it to a Codan dealer they can do that in a couple of minutes.
Your Selcall number can be any number you choose unless it is already used by another mobile
Cheers

"programming" involves setting a couple of switches to numerical positions (if I remember correctly they are called DIP switches). Some others who know how to do it have confirmed it is correct.
