Sat on the phone to telstra and found some info .

If you go on a plan for around $30 . you pay $1.45 per 30 sec with a flag fall of 45c

same for calling mobile and other sat phones .

Some companies had a cheaper rate for calling land lines , but very expensive call costs from sat phone to sat phone

You can however put international roaming on your GSM sim card and use it in your sat phone , but to a cost of $2 per 30 seconds . Thats $4 a min but you will also pay for the people who call you .

So your phone has cost you $360 a year with no calls devide $360 by 4 min thats 90 min talk time . Sat phone to sat phone is $6.37 a min is 57 min talk time. I would say that your sat phone calls would be min , so you can assume you would get 75 min normal talk time.

If I did go on a plan , I would have payed $360 for the year + 90 min talk time at $2.90 a min ($261) My total would be $621 .

Now i aw a site with pre paid card for $135 for 75 min talk time and 150 min over 2 months for $270 . I see it as a very cheap alternative ..

The site is here
if anyone else had info , I would be happy to hear from them .

Regards EC

Hello Eric,
The Telstra $30.00 plan includes $10.00 per month of calls. They are not cumulative, must be used in the month or you lose them.
The web site you've pointed out is interesting. Those prices, are they in US or AU dollars? I couldn't see a mention of the currency.
Hard to know which way to jump.
The site also only mentioned two models of the Motorola equipment, 9501 pager and the 9505 phone. No mention of the older 9500 phone.
I have a 9500 and I know member Jack has one too. We are both on Telstra.
Found out last week Skycomm in Qld can hook you up through another supplier for $27.95 per month. No details on inclusions, call costs etc. Call 0732521115.
Also look at Telecom"> they have a $30.00 a month plan. No included calls but can be suspended anytime to $15.00 a month retaining your number.

Eric that link is to a USA (Miami Florida) based web site all charges are in US dollars.

Telstra still has the TMS30 plan (And all the other TMS plans) with $10.00 worth of included calls and the charge rate to Fixed line or mobile or other 0147 sat phone service within Australa is 99 cents per 30 sec with a 50 cent connection fee GST inclusive.

Look here at Telstra terms and conditions http://www.telstra.com.au/customerterms/docs/mobilesat.pdf

If you want info on Telstra Sat Service DO NOT call the normal Telstra enquiry numbers they don't have a clue same for the Telstra Shops, you MUST phone Sat Services on 125 135.

Just to veer the topic a little.... I am looking at hiring a sat phone and found this
site For short term stuff I would think hire is the way to go, I certainly wouldn't have the need to buy one outright and have a plan or anything..... we would use it maybe a month a year... (?)

What do others think???
